Chris Benoit,

as per Forum Rule 12 (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm), please do not ask "what is best"12) How NOT to post on this forum:

Do not ask "what's best" because this question cannot be answered objectively. Each and everyone has their own view about what's best in a certain area. The best is what works best for you! a forum search on .bik files returned very little information.

have you read the guide avaliable at rad game tools?
Compressing with Bink (http://www.radgametools.com/binkhcwb.htm)

seems pretty comprehensive to me ...

Good grief, I can understand not asking "what's the best encoder" or similar but he's asking for advice about settings for a particular tool.

Sometimes, some of you mod's here need to loosen up a bit. IMHO

@ Taelon

did you have something constructive to add to this thread?

i simply pointed out the rules to a new(ish) user for future reference then tried to help answer the question with what little i know of .bik files.

the rule is there for a reason, and we, as users of the forum are required to abide by them. the need for such a rule has been discused many times before and invariably ends in pointless flaming ... in much the same way a 'whats best' thread does.

...and trust me ... if i was any 'looser' you wouldnt even need to buy me dinner on a first date ;)

now, if you have a problem with the way we(i) moderate i suggest you put forward your concerns to doom9. in the meantime, please keep the focus of the thread, as per forum rule 4!

cheers
j

Cmon guys relax i also did know that rule and as Taelon said i didn't ask for the best soft just the best results.

I have seen that link you gave me but it doesn't help me much.I tried some values and the results i got are not good at all.

The .bik i get are surrounded by i green like frame and have no sound!

Why could that be?

And what values would be best to put and data rate ada date peak?

As i sais i don't want to compress to a leeser file size i just want to convert the files to .bik losing as little quality as possible, and the way i tried the quality is unacceptable!

And what values would be best to put and data rate ada date peak? After being asked not to, you've done it again. Strike issued.

Is it the word best that bothers?Should i put optimal?

CWR03

It's not the word in particular that the rules ask you not to use, but the question in general: "What's optimal" is basically the same as "What's best." Rather than negotiate what terminology you can use, you could utilize that energy by providing as much detail about the program and the settings you've already tried, as well as the input format and any logfile the program in question has generated, and maybe upload a sample and asking why it looks the way it does.

I've actually wanted for some time to create a .bik file and will work on it myself in the near future, at which point I may be of more help to you.

Ok that i can do.

I haven't saved a log sadly but here are the settings i've used.

Compress to a% of the original: 100

Multiple of the overall data rate: 3

Number of frames to preview during bandwith: 8

Contrast: 12

Smooth %: 3

Compress audio: 0 (perceptually lossles).

Result are shown in the pics below+no audio can be heard!

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Regarding the video problem, try a different format file with the same settings - maybe it doesn't like the file.

With the audio, do you have the "Compress audio" checked? Apparently if it's unchecked it doesn't process the audio at all.

It seems that this happens with every mpeg i tried!I tried a wmv and there was no green frame whatsoever!Maybe there's something wrong with my mpeg decoder?

As for the sound i have tried with both compress audio checked and unchechecked and i still got no sound!

Chris,

did you read the FAQ's at the rad game tools "bink" site? i could be wrong, but it seems that all your answers are there .... When I compressing or converting some movies, I don't get any sound or I get an "error opening audio file" message - what's up?
The RAD Video Tools uses QuickTime to import compressed sound formats. Make sure you have the latest version of QuickTime from www.apple.com installed with all of the optional components. Since almost all computers have QuickTime installed, this usually means that the optional components are missing. To fix this, redownload QuickTime and choose "custom" installation - then mark all of the optional components and wait for everything to be downloaded and installed.

I read the faq up to a point but i missed that.

I do have quicktime installed but i'm not sure if i have chosen a custom installation, shall i uninstall-reinstall it?

thanx for that.

As for the video any ideas of what could be wrong?

Chris Benoit

I uninstalled it and reinstalled but there was not option to install optionall components,so what do i do know?

After reinstalling it i still get no sound!

When you reinstalled it did you select "Custom installation?" Only then will you see the options to install the other components.

If you did the above, did you re-encode the file afterward?

Is the source file MPEG-2, and if so do you have a software DVD player such as PowerDVD or WinDVD installed?

Chris Benoit

There's no such option for custom installation!(I'm using version 7.02.38).

Here take a look for yourself:

http://briefcase.pathfinder.gr/download/therock35/35437/475908/0/quicktime.gif

And yes it is an mpeg-2 source, and i have PowerDVD install plus the full K-lite Codec Pack, but there seems to be something wrong with the decoder.

I uninstall ffdshow and installed the latest one and the green frame problem has been solved finally!

But the audio problem remains! There's no such option for custom installation in the setup?I even got the latest quicktime installer, just minutes ago,and there's still no such option!

After so many tests i realised this:

If a software player is running and i then run the .bik with the bink player then for some reason the sound is ok,but if i run the .bik without a player already running there's no sound!

WTF is going on?

Also i noticed that if 2 players are running the second one displays video in more light colours. And the resulted .bik i get has always lighter colour as if a player was running?

Seriously is there something you can think of?

Could be a couple of issues - 1) Is Power DVD the "software player" you have running when you have sound? If so, open Volume Control and reset your Wave slider. 2) You may have a driver problem with both sound and video.

Chris Benoit

I believe its the second one,but how cn i solve this?

As for 1,no mpc is running when bik has sound.

CWR03

1) Did you check the Wave slider in Volume Control?

2) Update your drivers.

Chris Benoit

1)Yes of course

2)There are no newer drivers for my audio card.
