The window changes to the correct size upon the opening of the file, but stays completely gray.
Here's some info:
x264 settings: http://whitevoid.myvnc.com/uploader/files/settings.JPG
Process: Encode with x264 r291/MeGUI 0.2.2.4 -> Mux via Mkvtoolnix.
Installed: MPC 6.4.8.4.,Matroska Pack 1.1.1 (minus the old ffdshow), ffdshow 9/09/05, Haali's latest.
MPC 6.4.8.4/ffdshow can open my files perfectly. Am I doing something wrong?

You are not doing any wrong, its just that VLC cant play AVC files with weighted prediction and/or bidirectional b frames, as far as I can remember. If you want to view your AVC files with this player, you'll have to switch off those options.
However, I think weighted prediction, looks far better switched on for fades, so I switched players to MPC which plays AVC files flawlessly with all options...
So the choice is yours, keep your quality settings as you have them and change player, or keep your player and switch off the offending options in your encodes.

If it works in ffdshow (ffmpeg based) it will work in VLC. But maybe only in nightly builds.

That's disappointing :(. I was hoping to use VLC since MPC/ffdshow is so resource intensive. Oh well, thanks for the explanation.

VLC should be able to do it, just make sure you have a recent nightly build.
