bad quality when encoding 1.85:1 DVD5

As I know,there is 2.35:1 and 1.85:1 DVDs.When I use xvid to encode 2.35:1 DVDs,there are usually satisfying results.But when I encode 1.85:1 DVDs,the results usually bad.
my xvid settings(just for example)

the filesize is always good,while 2pass/1pass<30%(reduce the resolution is no help).Looking through the DRFanalyzer,the result is low low medium :mad:
and too many frames with high Q......

someone told me it is hard to encode a 1.85:1 D5,not D9, coz the D5 is shrinked and the reslution of 1.85:1 makes the video have too much information.
Is it really?

And I am sure there is no problems in encoding 2.35:1 DVDs with above xvid settings.

well turbo lowers VHQ for starters...
though I couldn't think of how the slight change in resultion could have that much impact on it..

I explain it at the beginning if I am not wrong.
And how to resolve the problem of the low ratio of 2pass/1pass ?
and what really annoyed me is too many hihg q frames(bad frames)...

have you allowed b-vops?(b-frames?)
that should bring up the quality
also you can cap Quants if you look around the options that should help

the title is Lords.Of.Dogtown.UNRATED which is a dvdr(4.35g).
Of course, I used b-frames.

I have tried several series of xvid settings and the result is the same.Is that because of the dvdr??? If I use a D9 to encode, will it be better?

most likly, why your using a dvd5 I'm not sure
but then might not be enough actualy data to make (RE)compressinf to mpeg-4 worth while
you might try AVC
X264 is looking pretty nice

Well, to further enhance compression you should enable AQ and Trellis at any rate; QP could also improve subjectively perceived quality, try it. GMC would help only little.

Using H.263 quantization instead of custom matrices could also yield a more pleasant look.

Oh, yeah: If I were you I would get rid of that AC3 soundtrack and just go for stereo. That gives about the biggest improvement to picture quality that is possible...

Edit: BTW, DRF-Analyzer doesn't know ***t about quality, believe your eyes only.

Since the source is a DVDR (do i smell piracy here? -> rule 6) I assume the source already went through a requantisation process. While this might look OK on the TV (maybe even on the monitor), this is the worst source to start with. It might be well possible that it looks like cr*p even with doubling the bitrate.

3.I just want to keep the AC3 coz my speaker is 5.1ch ^^
4.So many ppl tell me drfanalazer is **** and the only way is to use your own eyes.But I cant see the little difference most of the time even if I grasp a frame as a pic.Is there any software or some "avi data" can tell me something helpful? -_-;

Not piracy.My friend encode it so that it is able to burn on a dvd-r. What you said makes me come to myself.
