When I play this .avi file, the movie is ok but there is no sound in either player (Windows Media Player, DivX Player, Real Player, VLC Media Player). Gspot v2.21 shows that this is a valid .avi file with 45% video data and 55% audio data. It says that the audio code is PCM Audio with the status: No Codec required. This audio is not compressed, or is compressed using a very simple method. As such, there is no codec required to play it; all or the necessary software is already built into the O/S. Bitrate 768 kb/s (384/ch, stereo), Fs 48000 Hz. Direct Show Render/Audio Path: (S) --> AVI Splitter --> (R).
In Sounds and Multimedia /Hardware/Audiocodecs several audio codecs are installed in decreasing order of priority:
- IMA ADPCM Audio CODEC
- Microsoft ADPCM Audio CODEC
- Microsoft CCITT G.711 Audio CODEC
- Microsoft GSM 6.10 Audio CODEC
- DSP Group TrueSpeech(TM) Audio CODEC
- Ihacm.acm
- msg723.acm
- Indeo audio software
- DivX Audio Codec
- Sipro Lab Telecom Audio Codec
- Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec
- Voxware Compression Toolkit
- DivX Audio Compressor
- Windows Media Audio
No silent mode is activated. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi!
A) You might want to try using GoldWave (or similar audio editing software) to see if you can successfully extract and play the audio. Just open GoldWave and "drag & drop" the .AVI file onto the primary GoldWave window
B) Additionally, be good enough to:
1) Load the original video file into VirtualDub (or one of its many variants) or NanDub
2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"
3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (BOTH video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

No sound plays when I use GoldWave. I have tried to play other files with GoldWave which play fine. Here is the information from VirtualDub. Thanks!

I'm not presently able to view your JPEG but, the fact that GoldWave is unable to play what is supposedly a PCM (.WAV) 2 channel stereo audiostream would indicate that your .AVI does not contain a valid audiostream...

This format is accepted by Goldwave. If you open this avi in Goldwave and show a plain line (no sound) you have this: silence.
Maybe this avi is from a capture with wrong source audio selected.

Does this mean that I won't ever be able to have a sound in this file?

You can extract the audio with Virtualdub (menu File -> Save wav) and after open the wav with Goldwave (to exclude any problem open a avi file for Goldwave).
If Goldwave don't show any error, an after show a plain line you have a new version of Simon & Garfunkel song "Sounds of silence"
Sorry, but you have only silence.

I extracted the audio file but Goldwave still only shows a straight line. Yet, this remains a good song. Anyway, many thanks for your help!
