where do you keep your movies.
I kept mine in these big black boxes, then when to many were piled on each over, I have decided to buy one of these special DVD binders for 304 disc.

I take the cover out of the black box, and kept them in the binders.it is now much easier to select the DVD I want watch.I can turn the "pages" like a book.

now I have 80 black box to get rid of , but at 0.4$ each, I would like to offer them, or sell them on ebay.

Do to me & friends loosing data from binder material, best way is in the original stacked plastic stack(penis sorry), I've lost some very important data thru the ages do to just that cotton polyester or tappon whatever padding crap... Unless u want to use a grillo pad to scrub it off & loose what else is left readable off it...

I keep mine in a case holding binder. It holds 4 per page..and can hold up to 180+ I think. I keep track of them with a program called List Maker.

FWIW, i keep mine either in their original cases or in spindles. it's a real mess though. for music CDs i find it useful to keep lossless rips on my computer - means my housemates don't lose the discs, and if they do i still have a backup :)

I think chemmajik meant the spindles too. I still have a lot on spindles, but I've been working on putting them in jewel cases that hold 2 disks so I can label them more easily.

Spindles work good for me... a little bit of a pain when you want one near the bottom, though. I've got a simple Excel sheet set up for catalog-ing. Best thing I've done since I started.

I've been putting them into DVD Video "trim" cases. I'm starting to accumulate quite a few though and suppose I should get a rack. Is there any reason that they have to go into DVD cases? (versus the jewel cases or some other...?)

nope, no reason at all. they chose the golden mean size for DVD cases so they'd look like VHS but cooler on the shelves.

I had been doing that, probably boxed up around 400 CD's/DVD's before I realized how difficult it is to label them. I've switched to using standard size jewel cases that hold two disks and allow a label to fit in the bottom tray so printed text is exposed on both sides.

I put mine in slimline jewel cases in a normal dresser. The dresser drawers are great for holding hundreds of cases. I got the clothes piled in a corner. :D

I number the cases and use gtktalog (also called Gnome Disc Catalog) to keep track of what's on what number disc. If I wanna watch Juon 2, I type it into the search field, get the disc number, then grab that disc from the dresser.

I started out using slim jewel cases. As my collection grew I went to the large capacity binders sold by Univenture (it's hard to find large capacity binders). As my collection continued to grow and I suffered through the lack of quality Univenture puts into its products (zipper broke on a binder, and it's designed both to break and to resist repair, intentionally I think) as well as the inherent limitations of binders (generally just a pain in the ass except as something to fill and carry for travel or outings) I changed over to paper sleeves and black boxes. Yes, the boxes are from Univenture, but even they can't screw up a simple card box. They're only a couple of bucks and they hold about 150 DVDs in paper sleeves.

That's what I'm going to stick with, though I'd like to find a company other than Univenture to buy from. The boxes and sleeves are low cost, simple, and stack well.

I find the lack of good products for large capacity disc storage frustrating and odd.

I am just piling them up to each other, but recently i have changed this approach. Well I still use them, but since I wont use HDTV etc.. i will continue to focus on everything related to reduce the file size, ie mpeg4 and store them on external devices like hdds. I am looking forward to stream this content via a wireless way.

When I became aware of existence of movie organizers I went to download.com where there were plenty of such programs. For me as novice it was difficult to define what the best movie organizer and what the worst one were. To be honest, I used different movie catalogers, such as Ant Movie Catalog, All My Movies, but I set my choice on Movienizer. By its functionality Movienizer (http://movienizer.com/) is better for me. Even better, it's freeware. As for KDS CD Organizer I didn't know about it, sorry.

A lot of the "Collectables" traders store them in fridges/frezzers,( along with other stuff ) the big ones that they use in the big frezer shops and supermarkets ( I think this qualifies as re-cycling ), they do not plug them in and switch them on tough. but that is for long term storage not for every day use.

I keep mine in there original cases (just in case I need to sell) in a chest of draws ( a dresser for Americans ), got well over 200 easy, but now its full (need another one to start to fill ).

My prob is storing CDs , they weigh a lot even in small numbers and most "modern" chip board draws will not take the weight.

I'm surprised to see this thread still going since I commented on it four years ago now. Anyhow, I've modified my storage system: I've given up on individual cases and keep them on the spindles. Now if I could only figure out a good way of cataloging them, so that I know what I have...

I used the 'slim' dvd cases and became over whelmed, (as opposed to just whelmed). Took them ALL out and use paper sleeves, stacked vertically in card-b boxes from work which happen to be perfect width and each box holds 150 + - discs. Craft paper dividers about 3/4" taller than sleeves be-twixt alpha-beticly. -bell-

paper cases tend to put pulpy dusty crap on your discs over time...

i keep mine in a book case. haven't watched a DVD in months, though i'm trying to get my girlfriend to watch The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly because she still hasn't seen it.

these days i watch much more 16mm camera neg than i do DVDs. your mileage may vary :)
