View Full Version : Burning Result Problem

I have recently found out that some discs I burn are unreadable
at certain parts of the disc, usually the end of it (even when being read in the burner drive itself! just can't read!).
Now I know this usually relates to bad media, however I used 2 different kinds, one of which I used alot in the past and has worked fine.
My question is - is it at all possible that the problem is not the media but rather my burner? I'm using LG GSA-4120B burner with A117 firmware, and used DVDDecrypter and Nero to burn at 4x speed on 8x media. (Same results on both)
Are there any factors other than the media that could account for these readability problems? could it be the burner? some drivers? I'm really stumped.
Thanks in advance.

Yeah.. different media ID's.

If you've used your burner for a significant number of burns, or if your computer area is "not the cleanest", you might try running a DVD/CD cleaning disc on your burner. Maxell makes one that sells for approximately $10US...

My burner was used for alot of burns, yes.
However.. lens cleaning? I mean.. if it was a lens problem, I would expect that:
A) no disc will be completely burn okay (and some does)
B) that the discs would be more screwed up than just the end of the disc.

if the images of the bad burns are larger than those of the good ones, then the mechanism of the drive might not be allowing full movement to the edge of the disc
anyway, can't hurt to clean the lens as setarip suggests

nope.. I burned the same image over and over again
some successful, some not.
two different burning programs too.
Can it be a Windows issue or something?
The worst part is that I have no way to test it. Even if I get VERBATIM top-grade media and it burns okay.. doesn't mean a thing. some of my other media burns okay too. could just be a coincidance.
No way to check if it's the drive or the media..

However.. lens cleaning?
You won't know if you don't try. A one time $10 investment could conceivably save you far more in wasted media :>}

Can it be a Windows issue or something?Yes, make sure DMA is ON for both the hard drive and the burner. If you encounter a group of Read Errors when ripping, Windows is likely to reset the burners interface to PIO mode.

however I used 2 different kinds, one of which I used alot in the past and has worked fine. How long in the past? Maybe the new batch of these media were bad? I've heard a lot about bad discs and bad disc/burner combinations since DVD-R went 8x ...
I'd try some other media (preferrably very reliable ones like Tayo Yuden - however I even got a bad TY disc recently...just one, but it also happens...)

Hi,
A burner burns from the inside out, and the quality is always the best at a smaller circumference. Ofter errors occur while burning or the media is lease readable, as you said yourself, usually at the end/or towards the outside. (kinda of like what ceal mentioned above)
I also suggest burning a lower speed maybe 4x to that the burning process is controlled and less prone to errors. Maybe this file happens to be particulary big (forcing overburning) . . . . just a couple of ideas
Buy some RW and try and figure what configurations you need to get the perfect burn. (Then again maybe the RW will burn no problem--but that was not the point)
