Is there a way to transform a letterbox dvd to anamorphic using freeware programms?
I own a 42 " widwscreen tv and i can't watch a letterbox dvd on 16:9 format with it's subtitles. When i use zoom the subtitles dissapear.

Try the free version of DVD Rebuilder. There are free encoders such as Quenc and HC Encoder that will keep it all freeware. It has a l4:3 etterbox to 16:9 conversion function.

Thank yoy. I tied it and worked.I used Quenc but whwn i tried to convert a dvd-5 letterbox to widescreen it compressed the movie although it fitted on dvd-r. Do you know how can i make it not to compress the main movie?

The operation necessarily involves a re-encode as you are changing the content of the video - namely cropping out the black bars.

The only non-re-encode solution I can think of is if you reposition the subs sufficiently higher so that when you use the zoom function they remain visible. But that's an irritating process I'm sure (it requires a reauthor).

DVDFab 0.17 (Freeware) has an option "move subtitles" without reauthoring.

I think I remember reading that option doesn't work most of the time (the subtitles don't display), but I haven't tried it myself.
