View Full Version : .avi to .avi compression problems

I've been using AutoGK for a couple weeks now to compress .avi's exported from Premiere into the smaller XviD format to make available to friends. So far I love it, but I've encountered a problem while trying to compress my latest movie.

Basically what happens is that the video component of the beginning (title) does not play as intended while the audio plays normally. In the original .avi, there is a pause before the first part of the title comes up, then another pause and the second part comes up. In the compressed form, both those pauses are seemingly ignored (and the title just flashes by as one unit, instead of two separate ones). Since the audio continues normally, it results in severe a/v sync problems throughout the rest of the movie.

At first I thought it was an a/v sync problem, but then realized the video component of the compressed format was probably experiencing some kind of frame loss or something. It's also not a progressive a/v sync problem since the sound is off from the beginning (and I'm converting from .avi and not .mpg, where apparently the majority of progressive a/v sync problems come from).

I've reviewed the forum but haven't seen anybody else who has this problem. Maybe I missed something though.

I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions as to what I should do or try in order to fix this problem. Thanks.

There are some audio problem in avi to avi - it does not recompress audio at all, even you force mono option or somthing like ...

...
[15.09.2005 20:28:03] Output will contain 234078 frames
[15.09.2005 20:28:03] Demuxing audio.
[15.09.2005 20:29:14] Enforcing mono audio encoding.
[15.09.2005 20:29:14] Audio1 size: 122,375,978 bytes (116.71 Mb)
[15.09.2005 20:29:14] Overhead: 2,779,648 bytes (2.65 Mb)
[15.09.2005 20:29:14] Video size: 608,847,574 bytes (580.64 Mb)
[15.09.2005 20:29:14] Running compressibility test.
...

see on time. BTW audio size is same in any case ...

@ProbProbs

Hi!

Is there some reason you aren't using VirtualDub or VirtualDubMOD DIRECTLY for your .AVI>>.AVI compression? Do you have some special need (that I'm not seeing) in this instance to use AutoGK?

No, there is no reason. I just want to recompress my .avi's into smaller XviD files. I didn't know what program to use for that, but I had heard the name AutoGK pop up a lot for XviD encoding, so I figured I'd use that. I don't know how to use VirtualDub or VirtualDubMOD. I will try using them. Thanks.

Does VirtualDub allow you to compress it into XviD? I export from Premiere as .avi and it's like 1.2 gigs for a 5:30 movie. I can compress with XviD on AutoGK to make it 60 MB so my friends can download/watch it. How do I compress to XviD with VirtualDub?

Sorry; I'm new to this and don't really know what to do, so I just used the easiest program I found (AutoGK).

Does VirtualDub allow you to compress it into XviD?

As long as you have an XviD codec installed, yes...

There are some audio problem in avi to avi - it does not recompress audio at all

Its not a problem - its a feature and only if audio is mp3/mpa. If its AC3/PCM then normal conversion is done.

I'm a bit like ProbProbs, in that I've been using AGK to compress capture .avi to Xvid .avi. I was directly using Virtualdub, however after using AGK for backup of DVD TV Episodes I tried it for my .avi captures and was impressed with the simplicity and quality it produced. I simply couldn't be bothered messing around to do what AGK does for me automatically - it would be a long time before I got the same quality output too.

Thanks len0x

Do you think I could PM you and get some help using VirtualDub? I don't know how to use it. Thanks.

VirtualDub or VirtualDubMOD:

1) Load the original .AVI

2) From the "Video" dropdown menu, set to "Full Processing Mode" (usually set to this by default)

3) Click on "Compression"

4) Select your XviD codec and configure for the desired compression

5) From the "Audio" dropdown menu, select "Direct Stream Copy" (usually set to this by default) **Ignore this if using VirtualDubMOD**

6) Save with a new filename

Thanks a lot for all your help, zacoz, len0x, nechto, and especially setarip_old. VirtualDub works fine for me now, thanks again.
