DVD-5 holds 4.7 GB, DVD-9 (dual layer) 9.4 GB. But how big any encoding will grow depends on the content and the level of compression used. You can blow up as good as any movie to any size you desire. Probably you're handling your tools incorrectly but I don't know anything about AVI to DVD conversion and the program you use. Perhaps you'll get better help in this forum - good luck!

Welcome to the (improved?) forum venom30,
I suggest for starters you check out the stickies at the top of the page, especially "AVI 2 XXX fails (at some point)".
There are so many threads in this forum regarding AVI conversion the search button should give you enough info. to answer all the easy questions you might have, then you're welcome to baffle us with the tough ones :p

Just to clear up some potential confusion.
There is a piece of software called AVI2DVD.
There is also software called DVD2SVCD. This does have a mode for making DVDs from AVI input and is often called AVI2DVD when used in this mode.
Could you please clarify which software you are using?
