View Full Version : Movie Factory 3 SE OEM update for DL use

I thought I better post this query in the Newbie Forum as I am not certain where I should be asking this question.
When my last post regarding the Hauppauge Win TV USB 2.0 query regarding analog/digital conversion and DL's was replied to in the Burning forum, there was a suggestion to update my Movie Maker 3 SE at this link:
Ulead Site (http://www.ulead.com/tech/dmf/dmf_ftp_dmf3.htm)

The OEM that was included with my Hauppauge unit indicates that it includes Movie Maker 3.0 and also on the CD it indicates Version 2.6 and also on the disc it indicates 2002 - 2005.
When i went to the link there was this note:
1. The update pack applies to Retail and ESD versions (Disc Creator and Standard Only)

i realize that this is not a Retail Version nor is it a D/L version. I phoned Hauppauge in New York and could not find out if it should be updated and I also phoned to Ulead in California and they were uncertain as to whether the proggy could be updated by this or not.
Thus I thought that I would post this here to see if experienced members would have knowledge.
I found that both support lines Ulead and Hauppauge simply did not know what the answer was.
Is there a way to tell whether the Movie maker 3.0 already has the DL patch or would I have to do a full conversion of my 180 minute vhs tape and then insert my DL DVD???

I hope to get replies.
Thanking you in advance.

I posted a more detailed answer in the other thread.
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=712123#post712123

Try to apply the update patches and see if it will work. The worst thing that will happen is that you will get an error saying that you can't update because its the wrong version. Do not uninstall the program to apply the patches. The patches need the program to be installed.

If that does not work, you can download the trial version of Ulead MovieFactory 4. This version supports DL discs. You can use the trial version unlimited for 30 days. That should be more than enough time to convert your VHS tape. If you like version 4 and want to do future DL discs then you might consider buying it. Or go back to your version 3 when the trial expires.

Did you try to see if the 3 hour VHS tape can fit on a single layer disc? The quality will not be as good but it may be acceptable since its a VHS source.

EDIT: To answer the other question.

Is there a way to tell whether the Movie maker 3.0 already has the DL patch
You can try to create a DVD with Ulead MovieFactory that is greater than 4.7 GB and try burning it to a DL disc.

or would I have to do a full conversion of my 180 minute vhs tape and then insert my DL DVD???
The Ulead burning engine included in Version 3 most likely does not know how to burn to a DL disc. That is what the update patch is for.

Thx for the reply, I did not find it until now.
I did try the application of the patch, and I did find the Serial Number of my Ulead in the "About" section, so I registered it and it also took me to Support and so I clicked on Movie Factory 3 and the site that you so kindly provided the link to was there and so I went on to d/l it and apply it.

It came up with the message that it could not find Movie Factory 3???

So I did a Search and could only find a "short cut" which was very small in size and only gives me the programs options..like " Creat Disc".
Where is the proggy?
Or did I d/l it wrong from the beginning with my Hauppauge USB 2.
I have done several regular length 4.7 analog/digital conversions and they turned out fine.
Could it be that I don't get the program? Just a short cut. does not make sense to me, however I am a Noob.

I hope that you can assist with ideas.
Thankyou for your ongoing interest and support to this >>>> Noob!!

Did you ever install the Movie Factory 3 from the CD? It probably did not install for you when you loaded the drivers for the Haupage.

Confused, in my programs all that is listed is the Haupauuge programs for the Win TV and then on my desk top there is the following:
Shortcuts for: Program Guide 1kb, Win TV 2000 1kb, Ulead Movie Factory 3 (2kb), and Win TV Scheduler 1 kb  that is what occurred after I ran the CD that came with the unit.

And it was done through the Install Wizard and then I set up the TV and was watching a few channels to make sure I had it working OK and it was fine.

Then I did my 4 VHS tapes 60 minutes to my DVD and the coversion worked great and the quality off my BenQ burner was great. Watched them and there were no glitches, i was happy indeed.

Now, i hope that i can use those patches that my registration of the Movie Factory 3 lead me to after I registerd, however I must have done something wrong. It seems that the Movie Factory 3 short cut allowed me to copy the VHS tapes but the entire program is not installed?? Could that be possible??

I just looked at the CD and the folder for Movie Factory and it contains the following:
1.Document
2, OEM and OEM's 1 - 3
3.Set up 32 kb
4.Set up dir 1.59 kb
5. data 1 cab
6.data hdr
7.data 2 cab
8. engine 32 cab
9. info.ini
10.Info Device 1
11. Info Device 2
12..Info Device 3
13. layout bin
14. set up boot( 396 kb)
15. setup.exe Install Shield Set Up Launcher File Vers. 7.1.100.1248 (104 kb)
16.setup ini
17.setup inx
18.Ular cfg

i am really  and such an egghead Noob :o . I assumed when the cd installed that it completely installed everything as it went through its process.
So now I am really hoping that it simply is my stupidity in doing the install and that the full version of Ulead Movie Factory is there as I did register it and that there is simply not a short cut.
But I am baffled how I could do the 4 VHS tapes via Create a disc if the full program is not there???

I sincerely hope that someone can help and advise if there is something that I am missing that I did not do in the hopes that I can get Movie Factory 3 recognized by these patches which are presently telling me that Movie Factory 3 is not present on my Notebook.

I really appreciate your support in helping me resolve this matter.
Now I hope that all of the programs that came with the Hauppauge Unit are installed. It does seem that all the Win TV are as they are listed under Hauppauge in the Programs Section, however Ulead Movie Maker is not listed there and it is not listed in the add/remove and the only thing I come up with when I do a search is the Short Cut.

Everthing is a mystery to this Noob who is new to analog/digital conversion and I hope that I don't have to ask this type of silly question again.
As I don't even know how to install the whole Movie Factory if it is in all of those files that I have listed above. i have always simply inserted the CD and it fully installed everything, however perhaps with Hauppauge it only installs the entire Win TV as I guess its primary use is as a Tuner????
I apologize for this embarrassing predicament and look forward to some advice.
Respectful Regards, Dewey P.S. There are a total of 55 items on this cd apart from the Movie Maker 3 and it makes me wonder if all of these are installed.

If you can run the version 3 program, then it is fully installed.

The Ulead patches gave a "Can't find the program" error most likely because you have the SE version and it was looking for the retail.

Did you try to create a DVD over 4.7 GB and burn to dual layer dvd with version 3?

If that does not work, you have two options:

1 - Stick with version 3 and only create single layer dvds.

2 - Buy version 4 of MovieFactory or use the version 4 trial version for 30 days

Almost all of the time, bundled software with hardware is either an older version or a stripped down version that is not very useful. Customers then have to pay for the newer version if they want more features.

@Dew

It's not uncommon for the software that accompanies hardware to be a cut down version (commonly called SE version - 'Special Edition') that cannot be patched with updates / fixes that are available for the full retail version.

You are sometimes eligible however to then purchase the full retail version at a discounted rate. This would normally be mentioned in an email upon registering your SE version or by contacting the sales department of the software company.

Essentially, the version you get with the hardware is as much functionality you'll get without buying the full retail version.

What program did you use to create the successful DVD? Re-open the program, and find and click Help > About, and there will be a name and version information displayed. If that doesn't explain it to you, post it here.

The info is that the program is Movie Factory SE and gives the serial #. I contacted Ulead today and they since I registered it that I am entitled to a discounted MovieFactory 4 Standard or the Movie Factory Standard 4 that has Disc creator that does Data.
i can get the Standard for $34.99 US and I am posting to see why I may want to pay $64.99 for the full Movie Factory 4 with the the Disc Creator for data.
Other proggys that I have are the full version of Nero and Clone DVD and being a Noob I am confused as to why I would want the data proggy.
What I am using the Movie Factory 3 to do right now is to convert my 1 hr vhs tapes from analog to digital and that pretty much is all I want to do.
I have several vhs concert videos that are 180 minutes and I can't purchase the dvds and so that is why I am looking at the Movie Factory 4 Standard.

i would appreciate all experienced comments, thankyou.

A good comparison chart of the two verisons can be found here:
http://www.ulead.com/dmf/dmf_stand/compare.htm

The standard version should be good enough for your needs.
