Well I thought I would share this amusing story.

A couple of years ago my then 2 year old, who likes to watch movies that I taped or disks that I bought like Sesame Street etc., would watch me closely as I inserted the VHS tape or DVD disk into the seperate machines. I had the front loading tape machine on top of the DVD player within easy reach of a 2 year old, bad mistake.


Anyway to make a long story short, I went to put a tape in the VHS player for her one day and the tape went in but started making a horrible sound so I hit the eject button but nothing happened so I unplugged the player and took it apart to remove the tape and find out what in the world was making that noise.

Well to my surprise guess what I found in the VHS player besides the stuck tape...a DVD stuck in the bottom against part of the eject/load mechanism.

Seems my 2 year old had tried to play a DVD by herself but stuck it in the wrong machine.
The VHS player survived, the DVD disk did not.
So, that is one reason I now backup all the original DVD disks and the kids get the backups.

hehehe. kids and discs...

we've released a couple of kid's discs here labelled "kidtuff" or something - apparently there's an extra coating on it. something done at the replicators, i guess.

well, we tested them out by stomping on them and dragging them across the concrete floor.

they weren't as "tuff" as they said...

having my 63y/o grandmother try to play a dvd in her pc(which by all credit to her should've hada dvd-rom but she got jacked) and then calling me up and trying get it to work for about 40min till I asked her what the labeled speed was on it
and found out it was just a cd-rw -_-

One of my DVD ROMs was failing to read DVDs. So I took a screwdriver and vowed that I would either fix it or toss it in the garbage. I removed the outer case and the metal DVD cage, plugged in the wires and set it on top of my PC case. I placed a DVD in it and watched it spin up. I had no idea how fast these things spin!

The DVD flew off its spindle and embedded itself in the wall. I'm probably lucky to be alive. ;)

Yup, at full speed those things can run 20,000 RPM. Actually they did an episode of Mythbusters on that - it probably wouldn't kill anyone, but they did manage to embed pieces of CD's a couple of inches into ballistics gel, a material used to simulate human flesh.

Anyone with kids should be famliar with such things as food and fingerprints on the DVDs. The common attempt to put a number of disks in the DVD player, jamming the player and sometimes damaging the disks. The occasional disk that ends up under a chair leg where it gets destroyed. The plain ol' missing disks, because they end up behind the TV, against the wall, rather than where they belong.

Kids like to play with the disks, because they're shining and whatnot. But, should you ever let them play with a bad disk, such as taking it outside, using it as a frisbee, and whatnot, the kid will spend a lot of time trying to find another bad disk to play with once he loses or you throw away the bad disk that he was playing with.

Well, it's not a DVD story, but it's close and on topic. A next door neighbor borrowed a couple VHS tapes because her kid was having a slumber party. After she hadn't returned them a week later, I went to check what was up. I was directed to the ROOF of the domicile where the slumber party had apparently taken place. The kids had run an extension cord out a window and taken a TV and VCR to the roof. So a TV, VCR, and my tapes had sat on a roof outside for a week. So I was out a couple tapes... which put me ahead of the idiot out a TV and VCR. :rolleyes:

I hear you Joe. Without exception, every time I've ever loaned a VHS, CD, or DVD to a trusted friend I have regretted it. Nowadays I guard my media like King Solomon's treasure...

one friend BROKE a CD right in half, I picked him up and threw him out the door and locked him out, and his keys to his house were on the table still, good thing it was a cd I didnt realy like anyways, he actualy hada remind me of this, lol

i loaned a bunch of 7"ers to a DJ friend who was playing at the A&D ball a couple years ago. "in the navy" came back snapped along the groove somehow... and i still have no idea where "take on me" got to.

also loaned my 4:3/16:9 flipper DVD of "lock stock and two smoking barrels" to a friend whose brother went and lost it. still got the case around somewhere.

digital media is good because you can burn a copy for friends who you know will just bugger up an original... not sure if that counts as fair use though. probably borderline unless the friend then goes and buys (and destroys?) their own copy...

one thing that gets pretty tiresome is housemates that don't return a CD to it's case (or worse, return it to another case which then gets buried, lost or lent out). it's hard to keep your music separate unless you keep it all under lock and key (which is of course quite mean - art should be accessible after all).

my solution - rip everything, and make the computer a de-facto CD player. suits me fine because my CD player is very finicky anyway. once i get TV output thru component working flawlessly, i'll do this with DVDs too.

one thing that gets pretty tiresome is housemates that don't return a CD to it's case (or worse, return it to another case which then gets buried, lost or lent out). i went on holiday for several weeks a few years back and got a friend of mine (and his long term girlfriend) to house sit.

when i returned, not only had the girlfriend removed all the labels from the cans of food in my pantry one drunken night but had systematically exchanged nearly my entire cd collection (700+) for different covers.

she claimed that she replaced them in 'order' whereby the cd that was removed from one case then replaced another in the next case, and so on. her theory being that all i would have to do is follow the path of her destruction...
took me weeks to get them all sorted again.

and i STILL dont know what the cans of food are :)

LOL! Reminds me of the carnival games where they have the label removed and punters guess the contents!

My R.E teacher mentioned a story about his 3 year old daughter. She had seen videos being put in the player and a picture coming up on the screen. So she wanted to see what would come on the screen if she inserted a jam sandwich. The player survived, just!

Not sure what would have happened if it was a DVD player!

haha! why not play "can surprise"? each night open one up and try to make a meal out of whatever it was...

i dread to think what's going to happen tomorrow - having a party for "international talk like a pirate day" (sept 19th... google it) and my computer will be jukebox. only problem is i'm kinda protective about my stereo and there's a lot of LP's around. it's amazing how drunk people fancy themselves as DJs even on completely non-DJ equipment (i got a DJ stylus so if worse comes to worse, both record and stylus should still be okay. i fear for the 30 year old deck though).

looks like it's time to hide all my stuff :)
