View Full Version : 1080i HDTV - leave at normal fps or convert

I've read many posts about deinterlacing, bobbing, etc and there are so many options/opinions. I have a general question about working with HDTV (1080i,29.970fps) material. Is it smarter to convert to 60fps(LeakKernelDeint) and somehow get it to progressive frames or to leave it alone and just deinterlace (Decomb)? My destination is DivX to be played on my home player as well as my computer(s).

It depends on the source: film, video, or hybrid? There are lots of threads in the search function here & docs on avisynth.org for determining this.
What home player do you have? It would need to be very very powerful to decode 1080p @ 60fps Divx.

Please forgive the lack of details. In all cases, I try to get my video back to 24 fps progressive. I've read in many posts where people take 1080i and change it to 60fps, then process it a little, then somehow get it back to 24fps progressive. It 'sounds' like a good idea, just am looking for some technical advice to whether or not that's a road I should take. I have two divx players, the Avel Linkplayer and the Buffalo LinkTheater (wireless divx rocks!)

Not a good idea.
30p or 60i video will always unevenly stutter, if converted to 24p.
For sure, there actually are methods to remain fluidity, but they have other side effects like extremely high rendering time, blockyness and/or heavy ghosting.
if your video is mostly 24p telecined to 60i, then do an IVTC.
if your video is mostly 30p and/or 60i, then go to 30 or 60 fps.
