Future proof MPEG-4 choices

Currently I encode all of my movies to DivX 6. I've started thinking about the future of consumer devices, my computers, my carputer, etc, and I can't help but wonder if I going down the right road. Should I stick with DivX or maybe move to something like Nero Digital? I dont' use AVC stuff now because none of teh consumer devices support it...and my DVD player will stream DivX/MP4 movies over the air from my server so I need to stay away from AVC for now. My question is, should I go with something commercial like DivX 6/Nero Digital? Or should I use the more 'open' things like MeGUI/x264 and just wait for devices to handle it?

There seems that compatibility is important to you, so sticky with ASP. Once the Blue-ray/HD-DVD comes then will be a widely suport for AVC and you can start to use it. But until then the quality diference don't justifies the compatibility drop in your case IMHO.

And there no diferences between comercial and opensource MPEG4 codecs for decoding. If you use the same options in both at encoding time, the decoder will handle them in the same way.
