Philips 642k giving wrong aspect ratio

some videos are ok but some are horrible streched vertically... i was playing with settings and set as "pal" on the dvd seemed to correct it (i tested it only with last video)...

The 4:3 PS, 4:3 LB, 16:9 doesnt seem to make any change

So is that player not suposed to work well on ntsc system?

That happen to anyone else?

Is that normal on philips or all standaones to give wrong AR?

Unfortunately the Philips DVP-6xx range of players are not very sensible at displaying Mpeg4 encodes at the correct aspect ratio!

But to provide you more accurate information we would need more details about the pixel frame size of the encodes you've tried

Cheers

I've found, after tons of experimenting in AutoGK, that setting a max res of 624 (for 16x9 sources) and leaving it as Auto (for 4x3 sources) gives you the correct ratio when played on the Philips. Leaving the res set to Auto for 16x9 sources sometimes yields a resulting Xvid with 640 or higher res, and for some reason my Philips decides to fill my whole damn TV screen (no black borders at all). On the other hand, I've downloaded some Xvids which have a higher than 624 res and they look "right" on my TV, so perhaps it's the way AutoGK does its encoding as opposed to just the res itself.
