Xvid DVD player and subtitles

I've got a foreign movie encoded with xvid, and i have an xvid dvd player (Yamada 6600). I managed to track down a seperate .srt english subtitle file, is there anyway to play the movie on my dvd player and have the subitles on there as well? I tried just burning the vid file and subtitle file to CD and see if the subtitles kicked in with the movie but it didnt happen. Any ideas?

the subtitle needs to have the same name as the xvid to work.

mymovie.avi
mymovie.srt
