Pauses with Philips DVP 630

I've searched hi and lo, on this board and on others and I almost feel like I'm the only one in the world who experiences this.

While playing burnt movie dvd's (+r) I experience pauses of 2 or 3 seconds. It averages around every 30 minutes, although sometimes it happens 2 or even 3 times in a row. When I go back to right before the pause and play that part again it pauses at the exact same spot. This seem to indicate a problem with the disc, but none of my friends who play my discs seem to experience them. When I get discs from them I get pauses too. Original discs are not bothered by this.

I tried all this to no avail:
- I flashed the philips with several different firmware versions
- I flashed my 2 burners in my pc with different firmware versions
- I used a hacked firmware version to set booktype to dvd-rom
- burned at every possible write speed, from 2.4 to 16 times.
- I tried several brands, but mostly use Platinums

What's left to try to resolve this? If I can't fix it I'll take it back because I still have a few months warranty.

TIA,
Ingemar.

It would help if we knew what type of files you're trying to play. Mpeg1 (VCD), Mpeg2 (DVD) or Mpeg4 (XviD, DivX, 3ivx etc)?

Cheers

Does your player problem occur when you play "store bought" DVD's or ones you've made yourself?

If it happens with "store bought" DVD's.... there's something wrong with your player

It could be something as simple as cleaning the (pickup) laser

"Store bought" (what I call original DVD's) play fine, double and single layer alike.

So its only the ones I made myself, both SL and DL.

Btw, video cd's I made a while back play fine too.

What software are you using to create your Mpeg2 DVD's?

The latest Nero. My pc is more than fast enough to supply a constant datastream at least up to 8X.

I have also been checking if burnproof is activated during a burn, which it is not (light does not go out during a burn).

But some light at the end of the tunnel: I have upgraded to a new firmware on the Nec 1300A and the latest DVD I burned on 2.4X seems 'pause-free'. I burning some more today and will see if they are free from pauses (but not tonight ;-) ).

Could it be that, depending on the burner I use, burnspeed makes a difference in how a DVD is read? Can I test the "quality" of a burnt DVD?

Thanks mate.

I appreciate your help on this.

It could well be that a constant bit-rate of 8000Kbps might be too high for the DVP630!

Have you tried encodes at lower bit-rates?

Cheers

I meant 8 times burn speed, not encoding bitrate.

Could it have to do with laser calibration?

How about testing DVD's for burn quality? Is that possible?
