Pioneer DV-588A

This is a new model. I have recently bought it for $130. It plays avi files and Region 0 PAL DVDs converting them for NTSC TV. I like the quality a lot though I did not compare it to any other avi-playing models. I have not encountered any problems playing DivX or XviD content so far. It understands soft subs in following formats: srt, sub, smi, ssa. But looks like it's only the text. Positions and colors are lost.
It does not have any overscan compensation. Searching avi files is not smooth at all. I cannot say if it's jumping by key frames or what. But it's jumpy for sure.

In that case the player will support Qpel and 1 warp-point GMC

And if the Pioneer DV-588A has anything like the functionallity of my DV-575A there's no volume control or mute button and you can't "resume" after a full power-down.. But you can "resume" after stopping the DVD and visiting/changing settings in the players menu!

I would imagine the 575a and 588a have similar functionality. They have the same chipset.

My Pioneer dv-260 will auto resume the last 5 DVD's even after ejecting the disk and going to standby, and even after putting a different disk in and returning to the original. Does the 575a do this? I'm referring to DVD and not a divx file.

Can you jump to a specific point in a divx file, say 5 minutes, by entering the time via the remote?

Sounds like everything SeeMoreDigital has said is true. It plays GMC. I have nothing with Qpel to check on. If you stop avi, it resumes. Actually, to NOT resume it you have to press stop twice. Going to the File Navigator and choosing another file doesn't work after a single stop, it continues from the stopping point. After the full shutdown avi will not be resumed. DVD will, but the manual doesn't say how many it can remember.

Remote is very simple. Many functions can be done through the menu only. I'll try to find avi jump function. But I seriously doubt its existence.

And I beleive it uses the same chip as 578a or 575a. I've read about it somewhere on the web.

Funny enough, you CAN search AVIs by giving the specific time. It is hidden deep in the menu, you have to press lots of buttons to get there, but it works.
And I was also able to run a different AVI without a complete stop (stop button twice). So I don't know what's the deal here anymore.
Also I found out that it remembers VCD position same way as for DVDs -- it survives the standby mode.

I appreciate the info. I'll probably pick up one of these eventually to add to my growing dvd player collection.

I don't understand the comment about running an AVI without a stop. Can you first confirm that you can or can not resume a divx at the point you left off after going to standby?

After that maybe you can explain in more detail what you mean by "run a different AVI without a complete stop"

Sure.
Once I had a problem. I was watching an AVI. I pressed 'stop'. Then I pressed 'menu' which in case of data disc brings up file navigator (which btw is painfully slow). Then I chose another file and pressed 'enter'. Instead of playing the selected file it resumed the last one. If you press 'stop' twice it does the "complete stop" which means it loses the current position data and "rewinds" the disc. This is standard for all disc types. And my old player had the same feature too. That time I was able to go to another file only after performing the complete stop. Otherwise it would resume playing from the stop point.
Another time when I tried to stop and run another file I had no such problem at all. Was the difference in the discs or in my actions sequence, I don't know. I did not perform more tests on the subject.
Hopefully, it clears the confusion.

There's another topic relating to this player but I've found this one just now and thought that maybe the members who replied to this one might help me a little.
Is there any region hack for this player already? Because the one in the Videohelp.com site sounds a little obscure to me - I haven't seen anybody mentioning the 'condition memory' button to be present on the remote of this player whatsoever, except for the hack in Videohelp.com.

Sorry, don't know anything about hacks. My stuff is either region 1 or 0.

I just called the seller of a local store to have a look of the rear panel of this player and he said the player is 'region all'. This player isn't officially distributed by Pioneer in the country I live and I couldn't say where in the world this local store is getting it from.
