Philips DVP642 firmware -- where?
Does anyone have a *direct* link to either the 0531 (strongly preferred) or 1109 firmware update for the Philips DVP642 DVD player?
Perhaps someone can send it as a zipped attachment here or email the firmware to me privately (I'll provide a copy of my invoice as proof of ownership if needed). I've looked all over Philips' web site only to find user guides and pdf manuals. I searched via Google, Yahoo, and all kinds of forums but I've had absolutely no luck. I've even emailed Philips but received no response yet. I have model DVP642/37 (USA) |

Hi Aquilonious and welcome to the Doom9 forum,
It would seem Philips have been tweaking their "support" web site again, especially for North American player owners... and some links have disappeared! As far as I'm aware, Philips don't provide/keep links to old versions of their firmware. But here's a direct link to the current version: - Quote:

Thanks for the welcome, SMD. This forum has tons of valuable info. As I gain more understanding perhaps I'll be able to contribute more.
The first time I flashed the player with the firmware you provided the DVP642 didn't recognize some discs it previously did, like two DVD+R discs I have with MPEG-1 videos. Upon reading these discs a menu is displayed where I could choose which video to play. When the DVP642 read the disc it gave me an error, "NO DISC." I figured I must have done something wrong. I found the firmware install pdf and there it was. Dummy me! I created a multisession CD and didn't finalize it! You absolutely *have to do this* for the DVP642 to read the firmware properly. I re-created the firmware CD, no multisession and finalized, and it flashed fine. Would you happen to know where I could locate the older firmware, specifically the 0531? I meant to keep copies of Philips firmwares myself but ended up deleting them after reading their changelogs... As you may already be aware 1109 only appeared to add MacroVision. That said, once a Philips player has been "upgraded" I don't think it can be "downgraded" again.... I might be wrong... maybe Jefferson Ryan, our Philips firmware guru, can provide more information ![]() Cheers

I'm not concerned about Macrovision. The main reason why I want the older firmware is that the newer revisions seemed to have introduced some bugs regrading subtitles.
Please see here for more info: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/philips_dvp642/ Mr. Ryan: (if you are reading this) I wish that Philips would post its firmware like they used to. Not sure why it was removed from the Philips web site but now all that can be downloaded are pdf manuals. Last edited by Aquilonious; 23rd April 2005 at 02:29. |

Ryan has been M.I.A. for a few weeks now, as stated in his webpage
Here you can find the older Philips firmwares, as well as some customized ones by Bruno and others Unfortunately the page is in portuguese only Beware that flashing your player with firmwares provided by anyone other than its maker is done at your own risk! |

EDIT: In case some of you were wondering, all of the Philips firmware releases have been designed to run throughout the entire DVP6xx range. ![]() Cheers

If version 1223 has been installed on your friends player, can he not help you out with some more information?
Cheers

He bought it a few days ago. It's what can default out of the box. I talked with a CSR using chat on Philips page and he said that it should be posted on the web page soon
Just thought there was this version floating around.

The 0531 firmware comes with only 2 files but the 1109 or newer firmware in the 642 wants to see three files before it "upgrades". So basically just copy dvdxx.rom and rename the extra copy as dvdxxEW.rom Now you have three files and the firmware will "upgrade" (really downgrade) to 0531. Tested working by me and others. It's that simple, really. The only "serious" problem I have run into with 0531 is that on some divx/xvid files it does not want to allow fast-forward or rewind. If you can live with that, you'll be fine. |

The latest online firmware for the 6xx series is actually 0603, from June of 2005. You can find it here:

Phillips DVP642/37 Request for A Firware Update..
I like most of you purchased my DVP642/37 almost a year ago.
My player came with v1109 of the firmware. Since then, Phillips has not provided a firmware update for their units. I respectfully request that each and everyone of you phone and contact their representitive and put a request in for a new firmware update. This unit does not play XviD movies that were ripped in v1.1.0 nor v1.2.0 of the XviD codecs. I'm not too sure but I also don't think that this unit is capable of playing the movies ripped with v6 of the DivX codec. Speak with a Philips representative: 1-888-744-5477 Monday - Saturday 7:00 am - 11:00 pm EST Sunday 8:00 am - 11:00 pm EST Excluding major holidays Hope we get a Firware update soon... But if no one calls to enter their complaint nothing will get done... |
