svcd v. xvid

As a general rule, which would look better, a DVD encoded to SVCD or a DVD encoded with xvid (assuming same resulting file size, encoding competence, etc.)? Or does it vary by individual movie and personal taste?

I would go for XviD. Better rez, better bitrate management. I did 1 DVDR for each Godfather in XviD anamorphic, all language in AC3. Quality is remarquable
