Great news!

Thanks for posting the information JohnV.

So that's Sigma and ESS designing and building chip-sets capable of decoding Mpeg4/AAC in MP4...

...I wonder whether MediaTek will follow suit?

I hope this means new hardware and not only a new firmware for their current chipset.

That said, it would be interesting to know if any of their current chip-sets support AAC audio!

I wonder if any new ESS chip-sets will be designed to support Nero/Ateme's AVC codec?

This would be well cool!

"New Nero Digital Video Format"

well somehow ahead had to profit for not going the old "lets simply use avi" way and choosing full mpeg-4 (including aac and .mp4) instead

once again lets put emphasis on it: .mp4 is the container format specified in the mpeg-4 standard, definitely not an invention by ahead making it something like an exclusive "nero digital video format".
its possible to place divx5 and xvid (like any mpeg-4 codec) too into .mp4 and play them the same way on the "nero digital players" as a file produced with nero tools...
i had to say this

hopefully both

does anyone know whether the Vibratto II DVD chip is used already somewhere?

That's been out awhile, hasn't it?

Philips 642 uses it...

EDIT:
Yes, the 642 does use the Vibrato II.
I found a post on another forum where someone opened their 642 and took pictures of the chipset:

cool stuff, thats why the new philips players had some .mp4 support, still it wasnt really good, didnt support aac (only mp3-in-mp4) and also not subs and chapters if i remember it right, but maybe this was only an unfinished preversion of the firmware...

Correct.

Nero Digital files ALREADY work fine in my DVP-642 (w/ MP3 audio), so unless they're going to add AAC support, this announcement doesn't do much for me personally

Nice for the Americans , who can use the famous DVP-642... I would like to know if the brother 630 is in the same conditions... for Europeans
Greetings!

Hey here's a thought!

Maybe Nero will simply add an Mp3 audio encoding option to Recode2 instead.... Doh!

castellanos,
What ever plays in the DVP642, will also play in the DVP630/632 etc

That WOULD be nice for convenience's sake, but it's not too much trouble now to tell Recode to encode w/o audio, and mux in an MP3 using MP4Box or the like....just a few extra steps.

AAC decoding, and the 642 knowing what a friggin' PAR (besides 1:1) is, would be nice additions to the player, though.

Have you tried PAR encodes in the MP4 container with the newest firmware?
