philips 640k

i recently got this and have been very pleased with the results, the picture looks great.I also updated the firmware which allowed subtitles etc to be used with dvix movies

I recently tried to play a xvid movie and everything went weird, the picture went crazy and all the colors went crazy...

Is xvid not supported?

Sure, it supports XviD. It just doesn't support all of XviD's features. Since I don't think you encoded the movie yourself, then I don't think you can tell us the settings used. But certain Custom Matrices might show what you're describing. And it doesn't support Q-PEL or GMC, I don't think. But I don't have that player, so don't know if it won't play them at all, or plays it all corrupted looking. There are some other threads about this player in this forum. Look around.
