Really Old DVD wont play back in new players!

Any one run into this?

Waterworld DVD, purchased 7-8 years ago, does not play in anything I now have lying around the house for DVD players, not in Cyberhome DVD player, Koss DVD set top, Xbox, all makes of DVD roms and writers that I have tried (list is extensive).

It continues to play in really old DVD players and really old DVD rom drives though?!

This was one of the first DVDs ever I think, even before the onset of the now standard dvd cases, this one came in a standard cd-rom jewel case.

What RC does the disc have? Strangely some newer DVD Players seem to have more trouble with original DVD5 discs. Usually some strange pickup problem. Other than that there is no real explanation for what you are experiencing.

Hi Inssomniak,

It sounds like you have the Region 1 version, which, if I remember correctly, was the first "dual layered" DVD title issued/sold to the public.

And if it's the one I'm thinking about, it was indeed released in a CD sized case, way back on Dec 10, 1997.... How about that then?

However, I seen to remember that many early DVD players and ROM drives could not spin this disc (and required firmware upgrades), so I'm surprised that you are having problems!

I've just dug out my copy. And after blowing off the dust and cob-webs, I was able to spin it in all my ROM drives and my kids cheapo LG DVD player - and I live in an Region 2 land

Your disc could be slightly damaged. Some new DVD gear is far more sensitive than the old...

Cheers
