DVD plugin

Hello!
I'm a real copmputer guru so i thought that it shuold be easy as a DVD-player manufacturer to make a plug in function on dvd players so several video/audio codecs could be installed and made compatible with the player. My question is: Is there any player that can be modifyed to accept other codecs than the standard DVD or SVCD one? Example: Burning a firmware .bin file on a cd, and make the player accept DIVX and other MPEG-4 formats.

@Coops
I dont think so. Because most (if not all) of the standalone players rely on hardware chips to do at least parts of the decoding process its IMHO not possible to do this. These standalones dont have a "real" multipurpose cpu like a computer.
Maybe someone knows a standalone which has?
