flashing firmware from another player

I wonder how it works - it seems that all players have *.ROM files burnt into iso as their firmware updates. But exact name is different for each player. So if you don't have a reference firmware for your player then how do you know which file to burn to a CD? (or it doesn't matter and player picks up any *.ROM file from a CD?)

P.S. does anyone have experience flashing ESS-based player (first generation like yamada 6000/6100) with firmware from another player(same chipset obviously)?

Talking of which, is there been many success with using Zensonic's Z300 1.1 firmware with Neuneo's identical one? (both are MTK 1389 GE chipset) Apart from one person on Neuneu's empty forum.
