DK Digital 339, Tangent D-400 or Yamada 6600? (DE/GE, Subs or Prog Scan)?

hey there,

wondering if any of you people here can give me some advice

At present I own a DK Digital DVD-339 divx player - for the most part it works great, barr the occaasional movie problem. However there is still no subtitle support for it yet..allegedly promised for the future...Also I hear it uses the GE chipset as opposed to the DE chipset, which has been known to have a few bugs, (of which I don't know)

Now I'm looking at buying a divx player for one of my friends, or to get myself a new one and give him my old one. I've narrowed it down to 3 models but can't decide which and if they have their own brand new problems or if just the same as the DK Digital that I have.

First option is to get another DK Digital this time from blankdiscshop.co.uk site, as I hear rumours that this version of the new delivery model uses the DE chip instead. Is there anyway to verify this? Still this would leave me without subs support till they get around to a new firmware patch

Second option, is I notice Maplin sell the Yamada (Umax) 6600 for the same price. This uses a DE chip yes? and also it has subtitle support (tho maybe a bit buggy at mo but at least they're working on it). However, in the reviews I see of the player, theres mention of divx and xvid playback problems ocasionally. Are these the same problems that I'd experience on my DK Digital GE chip, or something completely different? There's also the factor that some remote controls seem to interfere but thats a minor problem really. Another thing is Im not sure if this player has Progressive Scan Output - it seems it doesn't from what I've managed to find. Not a problem at the moment on my 21" TV, however I'm looking at upgrading that soon to a nice widescreen to hopefully take full benefit of better picture.

Lastly, there's another player Maplin sell - £10 cheaper this one though. The Tangent D-400. According to the website it has progressive scan, just like the DK Digital. It seems that theres no subtitle support for it yet? Also does anyone know whether this player uses the DE or GE chipset?

hope one of you guys can help me with this,

many thanks,
Tuck

The Tangent D-400 uses the DE version. As yet no subtitles. The only avi's I've had problems with are Xvids with GMC, and the jitter that packed bitsteam in Xvid causes (same as all other mediatek based machines as far as I know).

MT1389EE

Either Philips DVP720SA or Pioneer 575 use the MT1389EE which from my experience with 1389DE perform better, at least packed bitstream is not a problem and bitrate spikes are held much better.

I have a thread in this same forum about the Philips model, the one I own.

Except for GMC all my movies played smoothly.

Just my 5 cents.

All the best,

Sharro

Sharro, so you're saying the DE chipset is better than the EE? -or at least the current DE firmware has wider support of files than the EE?

Have you any experience with FE based players? (looking into the Z330)

thanks
