Is it possible to convert Interlaced to Progressive?

This might sound stupid but is there a way to convert Interlaced DVD-movie to Progressive while encoding it? So that backup DVD-movie is Progressive while original is Interlaced? What problems it cause if it's possible? Any benefits?

It is possible. Most of the guides here explain how. You just need to decide what method you want to use. In ntsc land interlaced looks better on tv and progressive better on a computer monitor. How you intend to view it should determine what you do.
