Making firmware upgrade cd for Philips DVP642
I just got one of these. Before I do the upgrade I have a question for the people who have done the upgrade already.
With regard to making the cd with the upgrade, the manual states that the following is required: File System CD-ROM ISO Level 2 Mode 1/2/XA Character Set ISO 9660 Finalised Single Session Write Speed Slow I see all of these options in Nero. However, does it matter if joliet is checked? Also, I guess the mode doesn't matter? 1/2/XA I know these may seem like stupid questions but I don't want my player to get messed up because I didn't make the firmware cd correct. |

No, the pdf that comes with the file only states what is mentioned above.
www.p4c.philips.com/files/d/dvp642_17/dvp642_17_fur_eng.pdf File System CD-ROM ISO Level 2 Mode 1/2/XA Character Set ISO 9660 Finalised Single Session Write Speed Slow Nothing about whether to leave joliet or not. And I think it is strange that Mode is indicated as 1 or 2. Quote:

I don't think this Philips rep. was too confident in his answer
najarretd says, "Thank you for contacting Philips USA Webchat. My name is Devroy. How may I assist you today?" You say, "I purchased the dvd player model number DVP642 and have a question about upgrading with the firmware" You say, "The pdf http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/d/d...17_fur_eng.pdf gives the required settings for making the cd with the rom files" You say, "However, it was no clear if the joliet option should be selected or not" najarretd says, "Did you view the Read me file?" You say, "the PDF that came with the firmware upgrade? yes" najarretd says, "Yes." You say, "Yes, the file does not say anything about whether to leave the joliet option checked or not when I burn the cd" najarretd says, "If it does not mention the joliet option it may not be necessary." You say, "So I should uncheck it then before I burn the cd?" najarretd says, "Just record as a regular cd." You say, "The only reason I ask is because the joliet setting is a default setting. I was concerned about turning it off" najarretd says, "Let the settings stay the same." You say, "So then I should leave joliet on?" najarretd says, "Yes." You say, "Finally, the pdf says to use Mode 1/2/XA...does that mean it doesn't matter which one you use since mode 1 and mode 2 are different options?" najarretd says, "That is correct." You say, "okay thank you for your help" najarretd says, "Thanks for contacting Philips USA. " |

I just bought the DVP642 today, and when making the firmware update CD, I left the joliet option checked.
Everything worked out OK. Upgrade went as expected. EDIT (7/11/04): And I just returned it today. Not because of any problems with the firmware upgrade (which seemed to fix a few problems), but because of the problems it didn't fix. The player still crashed with virtually all of my Divx 3.11 movies and even, inexplicably, crashed on one of my DVD's. Plus my player had a bug where on a CD with MPEG-4 files, the DVD player would be unable to seek through the final clip on the disk (couldn't FF,RW, or use the 'display' button to jump around in time within the clip). Annoying! So it's back to my Media Center for TV/MPEG-4 playing. Last edited by Carraway; 11th July 2004 at 19:43. |
