Chipset Experts - Need Help!

Hi all!

I need answers to the criteria that most chipset manufacturers follow in releasing firmware updates for a particular DVD/Mpeg4 chip.

Of the many players on the market I've noticed the MediaTek MT1389xx units seem to be taking forever to get OGG and full Xvid support. Many of the units also have DivX compatibility and playback issues and it seems few manufacturers have provided any firmware updates.

What could be the reason for this delay?

Questions:

Do manufacturers have to pay MediaTek (or any other chip designer) for each firmware update to their respective players?

Do large volume manufacturers influence the quick release of firmware updates for any particular chipset and do smaller manufacturers get any benefit from this?

Do chipset designers generally wait for a big manufacturer to purchase a gazillion chips before they issue any updates for smaller manufacturers?

Does anyone know why it's taking MediaTek so long to issue any updates to the MT1389DE chipset in the Yamada 6600 player?

Any help you could give me with the above questions would be great and I thank you!

There was already an firmware update for the yamada 6600.
Until now it seems there is no newer one for any of the mediatek players. The problems are the same for all players, no xvid+packed bitstream with more than 1 bframe and of course xvid+gmc.
Subtitle support is not very good.

If you ask me Mediatek is currently more busy with the firmware for major brands, player from Pioneer,Philips and Yamaha are going to be released or are already available. Maybe they are even the same.
Dont know if they are using a newer firmware.

Thanks Zhnujm!

There have been a few beta firmware updates but nothing to fix Xvid, OGG or compatibility and playback improvements.

I sure wish I knew someone with more of an insight on how the firmware updates get issued. Seems like all MediaTek 1389xx owners have been promised the moon and the stars and given very little.
