Standalone: Problems playing DVD+R Dual Layers?
Hi there!
I've red in a famous german computer magazine, that besides the news DVD+R DL burners, it is a problem for Standalone players to play that burned DVD+D DL. It seems that they do not support that at the moment. Can somebody confirm that? Greetings!

considering that such media is not widely available, I doubt now is the time to get reliable stats.. and c't reported that many standalones didn't have problems.. the number is not much different from players that can handle DVD+R. And considering standalone prices and that there's a new generation DivX capable decoding chip every 6-12 months, it shouldn't be much to ask to buy a new standalone. I'd gladly buy a new one to get HD resolution MPEG-4 playback, and I know bond would gladly buy a new one that handles MP4 with all the bells and whistles

Hi. Are you talking about the KISS DP-1000 or DP-1500? It looks very good and plays almost all. Do you know if this player can play all regions?
Because the Philips Dvp 642 does. Last edited by castellanos; 15th June 2004 at 21:42. |

Well, I am looking for a Standalone DVD player. I've seen you guys discussing a lot about the Philips DVP624. I have also seen the Kiss Dp-1500 which it is also very nice.
I need an advice. I would like to have a DVD player with the support for all the possible formats today, but I also need the DVD player to be Region Free. So, please. Which one would you buy. Philips DVP 624, KISS DP-1500 (not Region Free) or may be another company even better? Greetings!

castellanos,
I would not worry too much about the Kiss player not being region free, at the time of launch. I doubt very much that the Philips player is distributed from the manufacturer's 'region-free' either, as this would break their agreement with the film studios. All of the present Kiss players can be made 'region-free' so there's no reason to doubt that the new players wont be able to as well. Cheers

The latest issue of MaximumPC just reviewed the Sony dual-layer burner and said they were impressed with the standalone compatibility.
They even tried it on older standalones. I think its too early to make a call on the compatibility of this new technology. Patience. |

Well, I've seen a few things... I have still two names going around my head "KISS & PHILIPS".
I want to by a new standalone player, as far as I could see, The KISS DP 1000 or 1500, and Philips DVP 642 are one of the best choices (I live in Germany, I think the Philips DVP 642 is not available here, in that case I've seen the DVP 737 with more or less the same caracteristics). Please, help me to choose. Which player of them (KISS DP 1000, 1500 or PHILIPS DVP 737) is the best? Greetings!

As I mentioned before, some of us are waiting for the new range of Kiss players to be launched, which will incorporate Sigma's new chip-set.
In the meantime there is some good news as Philips is manufacturing and supplying the DVP630 to us people living in Euroland. Which appears to be Europe's equivalent to the North American supplied DVP642. By all accounts this player will do very nicely. And performs well with Mpeg2/DVD and Mpeg4/mp3 in AVI. It will also spin Mpeg4/mp3 in MP4 but not Mpeg4/aac in MP4.... Cheers
