Is the xvid final 1 fully compatible for previos versions?
If not, wich version should I use?
Thanks,
Mark.

They're all MPEG-4, they're all compatibel. Problem is, hardware-players aren't if that's what you mean with 'compatiblity'. Use 1.0 stable with the profile that corresponds to your players abilities (don't know which one that is, tho).

yes, there were some very rare builds, which were not compatible to mpeg-4, and therefore could cause problems, but 99% of the files are

you have to understand that xvid (as divx5, 3ivx, nerodigital aso...) follow the mpeg-4 video coding standard, which specifies how the encoded video streams should look like (technically)
therefore also of course all streams from all mpeg-4 compatible codecs (no matter which one and what version) are compatible to each other

Unfortunately it isn't that simple. The DivX decoder cannot decode all MPEG4 ASP features, this includes more than 1 b-frame and GMC. Maybe the next version of DivX can. So you'll have to use XviD's 'profile@level' feature.AS@L5 should ensure that DivX can play back XviD - but I stand to be corrected by anyone who actually uses DivX (I don't).

Edit: Ah, bond was quicker than me. So does the DivX decoder play back all XviD content correctly, now?

i did some interoperability testing with the .mp4 container and never encountered problems (with divx 5.1.1), but i never really regularily used it

but as divx5 now offers this "generic mpeg-4" option, i assume they cared about removing problems with older versions
