AFAIK Nightmare Before Christmas (the Tim-Burton-one) is no cartoon but a puppet-animation. This is definitely not what cartoon-mode was meant for.

It encodes beautifully without cartoon mode. And I mean beautifully, just don't fear high resolution.
I've encoded it to 1cd, 688x384 I think, 2 vorbis audio tracks, lanczos.
As for xvid - qpel, gmc, high vhq - just my standard settings.

Best 1cd I've ever seen.

Indeed, Panic Room and From Hell are insanely compresible.

Amazon lists two options: a 143min one and a 77min one. Which one are you talking about?
BTW, is GMC worth using now? I don't know what to search for in order to see reports on GMC in XviD 1.0.0

77 minutes.
Please note that I stressed this high resolution because many people would go for lower - "compressablity" was around 40% if I remember correctly.

I think that the last I heard was that it was now safe to enable, especially with VHQ4. This would mean that at the least, it won't cause any artifacts or lower compressibility and, in the worst case, simply won't have any effect (positive or negative) on your encode. Someone can feel free to correct me if I'm wrong here though.

Well, guess these movies are also insanely compresible or even extremely compresible:

A Few Good Men (138 Mins)
Fight Club (139 Mins)
Mystic River (138 Mins)
Insomnia (118 Mins)
The Score (123 Mins)
The Recuit (115 Mins)

I encoded them on 1cd respectively, and the overall quality was so amazing... totally overwhelmed by the great compressibility of XviD 1.0!
