Are there any stand alone players capable of playing mpeg2 files?

You're talking about RAW Mpeg2 streams before they're authored/muxed into an VOB container... right?

If so then yep, quite a few players can do this now. Some very cheap models, some very expensive models!

And not just RAW Mpeg2 streams are supported. Some players can also cope with RAW Mpeg1 using frame sizes and bitrates far bigger than VCD.

I have found some expensive players that are capable of playing mpeg2 files:
Before I spend that kind of money please suggest an inexpensive model.
The model I was looking at required a file extension .mpg
Is that the extension that most players require?

Over here in the UK I know a few cheapo Bush players can play the files!

What I suggest you do if/when you go player shopping is to burn some Mpeg1 and Mpeg2 files onto separate CD~R's

Hi hms!

I read the specs. on the DVP642 and it's rated for 120 Volts/60Hz. If you are in Europe you could buy a step down transformer, they are not expensive. I purchased a step up for my Yamada 6600 (220-240 volts) and it works just fine. If you do get it, there are a couple of major firware updates that you should install.

I got the Philip DVP642.
I did the firmware upgrade.
It does play raw mpeg2 files except....
The video streams I am trying to play have a nominal bitrate of 150000000.
The player only plays the audio of these files.
When I demux the bitrate is then correct and the video plays perfectly:
But the whole point of wanting to play these video streams is not to demux them in the first place.
Is is possible to restream a multiplexed video stream and to rewrite and correct the bitrate?
(ReStream only rewrites elementary streams)

Problem is not the nominal bitrate of the video stream:
Other players like the cheap CyberHome is able to play that same file without problem.
Even the older Philip dvp 242(?) plays the video.
But not the dvp 642!
Perhaps this new player is Broadcast Flag enabled?

The problem is with the GOP structure of my mpeg2 file and not with some imagined broadcast flags:
This can be easily fixed with the GOP fixer utility in MPEG-VCR.
Now the file plays perfectly: pause, fast-forward, resume, etc.
The DVP642 is proving itself a great player.

PS. Yamakawa 255 can do it perfectly, I've tested it.
