jumps and blurrs with skate dvd's

Hello - this is my first time here. Am about an intermediate level encoder, but I value quality - the programs I use are listed below.

So, I have encoded over 50 ep's and movies and I have gotten the method down very well - very good encodes. My main problem right now is skateboarding dvd's. I have encoded action movies and I never have a problem, but with skate dvd's sometimes at trick in progress is kind of blurred or jumpy or just not smooth. I would think this has to do with TMPGEnc - converting from 29.9 to 23.9 frames - and inverse teleclining. I am not sure though - when I look at the frames to correct, TMPGEnc does a very good job of taking out the bad frames. MOST of the video will encode fine, even tricks - it is just sometimes - but obviously enough for me not to be satisfied with the quality. I normally encode full screen (skate vids) at 640x480 and bitrate around 1,500 for a 30 min video on one cd.

Hopefully I can get more specific with some suggestions - thanks for your time and help!! NOTE: I am completely open to new ideas, so if you think I should try new encoding methods please let me know.

If Inverse Telecine is concerning you, then you may want to take a look through www.doom9.org/ivtc-tut.htm for hints. It's based on DVD2AVI projects and AviSynth, but you may find it helpful in describing what to look out for.

Are you sure they've been telecined in the first place? A lot of that stuff has been filmed with video cameras, and about all you can do is to deinterlace them, keeping them at 29.97fps. Use AviSynth for frameserving, instead of a VFAPI, and use KernelDeint on them if you decide to try that. Or you can try deinterlacing them in TMPGEnc.

Personally I would not use TMPGEnc to generate DivX encodes or any other Mpeg4 variant.

If your sources are DVD's then why not use something like Gordian Knot. At the very least, an application such as this can generate some decent quality 2pass encodes!

Thanks for the input. I only use TMPGEnc to inverse-telecline. I use nandub to do the encoding. The post from manono was the most help so far - I encoded one skate dvd without even using TMPGEnc, skipping the inverse-teleclining all together, and this works well. I have encoded so many movies I never even thought about not doing it. And about the quality using TMPGEnc - it is excellent - my encodes are always dvd quality on one or two cd's.

Is the video that bad?

There are plenty of DVD/Mpeg2 to Mpeg4 (DivX, XviD etc) encoding applications that offer all mannor of tools!

Even old faithfulls like DVD2AVI (v1.77.3) can be configured to generate excellent looking 2pass Mpeg4 video streams.
