XviD 1.0 FINAL - compatible with todays HARDWARE players ?

Hello !

If i encode a movie with Xvid 1.0 FINAL ( without Qpel ) will my divx player play it correctly ? ==>> packet bitstream problem

Just do a small test clip burn it on CDRW and you'll know.

I know... I meant the ALREADY made Xivid movies. I checked some encoded with RC3 and playback wasnt smooth. Haven't tried any new ones yet.

I need this beacuse i want to remove packed bitstream feature from Xvid before i burn it to CD/DVD if neccesary.

I have a Denver 438 ( Mediatek based player ). I know the playback is jerky on Along Came Polly ( BRUTUS Release ), which is encoded in 1.0 FINAL. I don't know if with QPEL and GMC. Will check today...

I would like to think so.

So far I've been able to play every matrices I've slung at my Sigma Xcard and that chip's around two years old!

That said, if somebody here wants to make an clip availabe (without GMC and Qpel) for download I'll check it out....

If that's so and if it will support high enough max bitrates, I think i will have to look into the details of producing mp4 contained streams.

AFAIK, the matrix seems to be somehow 'embedded' in the file. I see no problem with using custom matrices with standalones if they can play XviD files with the normal H.263 and MPEG matrices.

The only way you might see problems if the standalone manufacturer did a cheap hack to hardcode the standard XviD matrices. But I don't think many will be THAT stupid.

I've done a few tests with XviD at the codecs maximum bitrate (ie: 10,000kbps). And when muxed into an MP4 container they work fine with the Xcard... Is that an high enough bitrate for you?

Yes it will play smoothly.

I have a Philips 737 Divx/Xvid player (based on the ESS Vibratto chipset) and it plays movies encoded with Xvid 1.0 Final without problems.

I encode with the default settings without Quarter Pixel and GMC (Two pass / Profile@Level: AS@L5 / Quantization type: MPEG).

might be a stupid question, but does the decoder really need the quantizer matrix? i thought it is only used for the creation of the frames while playback is generic for all matrices and therefore possible without the knowledge of the matrix used for encoding?

If your player is mediatek based, you can encode with qpel but not with GMC, and if you use more than 1 consecutive bframe (the default is 2) you must turn Packed Bitstream OFF
You could have problems with custom matrices. As you can read in this thread you should upgrade your firmware to have nearly-full Custom Matrices compatibility.
