Force XviD to Play DivX... or else...

I'm having difficulty getting my system to keep XviD as the default decoder for DivX (what with having DivX installed).

Anyone able to help me out with a registry key or give me a few tricks?

I'm NOT wanting to install ffdshow.

The problem is that I prefer to use Media Player Classic but unfortunately, it (nor does DivX) doesn't handle Aspect Ratio the way I want it to.

I've been putzing around with ZoomPlayer, but haven't had much luck getting it to do what I want (which is to play an anamorphic matroska encode by keeping the vertical unchanged and stretching the horizontal).

there's the red light filter manager which allows u to set merits for the decoder. but divx is an ugly codec when it comes to hijacking your decoder of choice.

Hi Asrial,

The 'first' thing you should do it to go into your DivX Decoder Properties, Quality Settings and make sure there is not a tick beside 'Support Generic Mpeg4'

Then go to your XviD decoder configuration settings, 'FourCC Support' and make sure 'DIVX, DX50 and mp4v' are un-checked too.

If you have any more Mpeg4 decoders, such as 3ivX, uncheck anything that has been checked under its 'Direct Show Priority' settings.

Confusingly all the Mpeg4 codec suppliers 'present' their decoders 4CC support differently. DivX calls it: 'Support Generic Mpeg4', XviD calls it: 'FourCC Support' and 3ivX calls it: 'Direct Show Priority' However, they all perform the the same task!

In short, the first thing you have to do is go into all your Mpeg4 'decoder' settings and make sure 'nothing' is checked. When done, DivX will play with the DivX decoder, XviD will play with the XviD decoder, etc, etc!

Now because you want the XviD decoder to play DivX content, just revisit the XviD decoder configuration settings, 'FourCC Support' and make sure 'DIVX' is checked.

Pretty sure that DivX has a higher priority than XviD for all supported fourCC's. If you don't want to use DivX, just unregister divxdec.ax. Make sure that you have something installed to take over DIV3 and DIV4 though as XviD won't be decoding them.

It should not make any difference!

As long as you follow the proceedure stated, the DivX encodes will play with XviD's decoder!

One important question that needs to be asked and confirmed. Are these DivX encodes DivX5?
