Panasonic DVD-LA95

My friend owns one for those portable dvd players- looks much like a laptop. Its a PANASONIC DVD-LA95 PORTABLE PLAYER. (Btw, this is his only dvd player, so he uses it for everything he watches).(CLICK HERE FOR PICTURE OF THIS PLAYER)Whne he first got it , it worked like a beauty. But now whne he tries to watch ASIAN bought dvds(region 3), the screen colour is BLACK AND WHITE. WHile all otehr region dvds play in full normal colour, regions 3 dvds play in black and white. Is this a problem due to the dvd's laser? Also his dvd player is only about 1 year old and to my memory it cost him a fortune.

But now it has this problem which nor me or him knows what is going on. SO does anyone know why?
