Divx players
I think what people REALLY want is a portable divx player.. (similar to a portable cd player ) that you can plug into your car/vans video screen or a tv at the hotel ..etc..
Ive looked at many posts and sites that offer divx/xvid compatible dvd players.. but one thing is common.. they don't all support the same features.. and I even heard of a guy(the post is in audio encoding) that can't play a disk that was muxed with avi-mux.. only virtual dubmod muxed avi's will play proper. Maybe just a cheep computer is the answer still, until they can adapt a chipset that will handle most possiblities(even a corrupt file) |

portable DivX player? But there are tons of those. They are called Notebooks and are available in varieties from 10" to 17" widescreen displays and usually have no problem playing whatever you throw at them
There are portable DVD players as well, but they are no big hit either, are they? And first you have to get a reasonable "desktop" offering, like a player that handles MPEG-4 ASP, different containers, etc, and that pretty much requires a standard PC, not a specialized unit.

I know what you mean fedge!
Given that it's possible to purchase a full sized DVD player right now in the UK for £30.00 I don't think we're going to have to wait very long before 'cheap' portable DVD players become available! I bought a NAPA portable VCD player a couple of years ago. But I have only used it a handful of times for VCD playback due to it's lack of display. In fact I only use it to test Mp3 files! The only problem is, why bother having a disc based portable players at all. I'd far rather have a portable player with built in colour touch screen/display and removable 'laptop' style hard drive. And given that quite a few of the camcorder manufacturers are about to launch cameras with hard drives, this doesn't seem like such a bad idea! OK they will be far more expensive. But they'll have more multi functionality! Cheers

GEEZ.. i never even though about hard drive players...
That would simplify it all.. the codec could be updated and stored on flash memory.. along with all the OS to play a video or whatever. And then you just connect your pc and dump movie to the player. I think about a 5 inch screen would be decent. and a 3 inch acceptable. with video outputs a plenty and 5.1 decoding. Price would have to be about less than 400 dollars(usd) to be competative with the other responders quote about laptops. If they could bring it down to below 200 it would ALMOST be a main-stream product, not just a luxury or novelty(like the old tv watches of the 1980's) |

Yes, a new style PDA type device would work fine.
But again, even with a PDA. What happened to the idea of true convergence! There's no doubt too, that small handheld devices like the Archos AV320, have the processing power to handle audio & video now. Even puke the signal to a TV. But it's attributes are solely in the audio/video camp. It would be nice to think that in the future, similar devices would be able to handle, telephone, faxing, SMS, web browsing, contacts, notes, calender, calculator, etc. Indeed all the things that my 'five' year old Nokia Communicator could do - God rest it's soul! (Unfortunately it's li-ion battery has died and is not worth replacing) Now, I'm aware that many people were put off devices like the Nokia Communicator because they thought it was, 'just a big phone'. But many of these Luddite's, also carried around with them, one of those really silly Casio electronic organisers! Today, I think it's fair to say, people are getting used to the idea of carrying large chunks of plastic and aluminium around with them. However, these 'techno chunks' still don't look very cool when you hold them up to your ear! So with this fact in mind. I don't see any reason why new 'all in one' PDA style devices can't come with a separate 'wired/wireless' handset or even headset. That way the main unit could be placed out of direct sight in jacket pocket, bag, glove compartment, desk etc, until required! Shame about the Communicator I really loved that massive widescreen display and qwerty keyboard! Cheers
