What Divx Decoder chips are out there?
I am hoping someone can answer this question for me.
I might be getting a Divx Enabled player this X-mas but I was wondering what chips are out there at the moment and which player should I go for? Most of my stuff is 3.11alpha and Xvid so I want that to play. From what I understand there are a few chips out there from: Sigma (oldest chip and not to powerful?) ESS (newer chip?) Sigma (new Sigma chip, really good?) Is this all the chips? are my comments correct? Does anyone know what chip the Kiss DP-1500 uses? Thanks |

As far as i know there are currently only players out with the old Sigma chip and the ESS chip.
What i can say from my own tests is that the Sigma chip is maybe older but supports higher bitrates than the ESS chip with DivX4/5/Xvid. The ESS chip support DivX3.11 in hardware so its better for playing DivX3.11 files (Sigma is using a software emulation for this), also it supports DivX audio. (at least the player i have) |

Thanks for the reply Zhnujm. I thought the new Kiss players were based on a new Sigma chip? I may well be wrong but I can't see any details on their website about it.
I have a lot of 3.11alpha stuff so I think ESS player will be the better choice for me. Would you have any recommendations about a good player to buy? or has anyone seen a list of Divx players with ESS chips? I would really like a player with LAN Thanks a lot, Last edited by Top_Cat; 28th October 2003 at 19:35. |

I would not recommend any ESS player at the moment
![]() Problem i know from my player (Yamada 6x00): -no support for 2 audio streams -not all resolutions fill the tv screen -wrong aspect ratio with avi files maybe thats different with other players but from what i heard its not. maybe that changes with a new firmware version, but maybe not

a philips guy told me that philips have their own chips but they prefer to release them first in non-philips products (so that the philips brand isnt hurt if something goes wrong)

With the latest firmware doesn't the Yamada correct the problem of not all filling the tv screen? or is that still an issue with some resolutions? That would be a big problem for me and would definately put me off buying one.
Are there any other Divx Players with built in network cards other than the Kiss DP-500? Thanks |

No, its not completly solved.
Some resolutions still have borders, especially the important 640xXXX, at least in PAL. Its different with NTSC but then in NTSC other resoluions are not fullscreen... The Philips 737 also uses the ESS chip, and has the same problems as the Yamada. I dont think you will see Philips own chip soon in a divx player, its much to expensive and made for encoding. |

I have a lot of PAL DivX (in 640x???, 572x???, etc. format).
They were played in a box on old firmware. Latest firmware for RJ4000 (ESS chipset) solved this problem. They all are in full screen now. Still player is very picky about A/V-muxing (does not like how NanDub mux AC3 sound). Though, I'm not sure that this is a problem of ESS chip only. I have to use NTSC output. Now all PAL DivX movies are full screen (before some of them were in boxed resolution only). Never had this problem with NTSC DivXs. |

How about the Equator chips? Are they used in some dvds?
They provide wm9 decoding, including HD wm9: http://www.equator.com/main/index.html?1 The latest SoC also supports HD vp6, which is the codec to be used in China´s new HD EVD. |

DRM? Let's all join me in the chorus "We don't need no stinking DRM!".
I wonder how that is supposed to work. But MPEG-4 ASP does include all the features advertised in the elta player, so that might just be the chip. I'm hoping I can convince elta to send me a review unit so I won't have to buy (they are not for sale for another few weeks, and then it depends on which stores will offer them.. divx capable DVD players are still not too common around here so my chances of finding one would be rather slim).

did you get a release date for the new elta player, doom9?
if so when is it supposed to be in stores? The guy who sells the units on ebay has several bids going, all stating a different date. I don't really think he sent out a single one by now. The Austrian Elta site gives a release date: by end of january 2004 ...which isn't too good.... cheers Last edited by monty0815; 28th November 2003 at 14:12. |

launch data is mid December afaik. And the devices on sale on ebay seem to be legit, but they're only available in small quantities.
