Loss of usable video output from DVD

I know I am stupid - thats because I never leave things alone and always fiddle with things that don't need mending. My problem is this - I have bought a DVD player and the video output was fine but I initially had problems with changing the sound output from 5.1 to stereo. (Thats all I have at present).

Whilst in setup I decided to play with different setting and the result is that I can no longer get a stable picture. There is a picture of some sort that is all broken up and moves upward at great speed. This means that I cannot get a picture I can no longer access the menus to sort our the problem.

I wish to use either a simple video output or S-Video. Neither of these work. I do not access to any other VDUs, TVs etc that have any other type of video input.

Any ideas on what I should do to correct the situation.

Oh dear!

We need a bit more info please. The make and model number of your DVD player would be a good start.

You may have set your player to NTSC output by mistake. Do you know if your TV can accept NTSC signals? If not do you have access to another TV that might?

My DVD player is an unknown (to me and my friends) SHOV DVD-338.

The Video display was set to automatic PAL/NTSC and both PAL DVDs and NTSC DVDs gave a excellent picture. My problem was with the sound I had it set to 5.1 but was only using two speakers so part of the sound track was lost. After playing around with the video out I think I must have set it to YUV (whatever that is) and now I no longer have a picture that makes any sense.

Because I have no picture I cannot access the menus so i cannot make any changes to correct my error. What I need to know is what I can do to get a good picture. What type of VDU input is necessary to do this?

Yes, some DVD players will let you output different video source signals.

On a DVD player (and most home equipment) there are only three! Composite, S-VHS and Component video (although this can be confused between RGB component video and/or Y, Cb, Cr or R, Y, Pr or B,Y Pb.... anyway, as you can see, it can get a little confusing!

If you have your DVD player connecteted to your TV via a scart connector only, then you may have (not intentionally) activated some form of 'component' video output only!

However, fiddling around with the sound output settings should not have upset or altered the video output settings

Although I have to admit, I am not familiar with the make and model you mention I would find it strange that such a player!

Anyway, I will search around tomorrow and see if your DVD player has a wierd 'componant' video setup, and if possible, let you know how to return your player back to composite video (if this is your problem).

Hopefully your player should be able to be returned to a state whereby you can fiddle with it some more!

Me, I was taking TV's apart at the age of 10. Much to the disgust of my parents!

This probably won't help, but it requires practically zero effort, so it's worth a try.

Unplug the player overnight. It might reset to factory defaults (emphasize might).

Thanks for the advice.

The problem did not arrive because I fiddled with JUST the sound output. Unfortunately I experimented with many settings to see what happened, video included. I played with fire and now my fingers are burnt.

David, it pains me to say that I could not find any useful info about your DVD player at all. There's some info for a SHOV 668 but not a 338.

Maybe, taking it back to the store and jumping up and down like a little girl might help you to get it swapped!

Were you trying to make it region free by inputting some dodgy codes or something?

No dodgy codes or anything like that. All i did was play around with the settings to see what they did. I often do this and I never learn to leave things alone.
