AC3 Encoder

Has anyone thought about making a realtime AC3(or DTS) Encoder filter to pass 5.1ch audio out through SPDIF to a reciever? This would be really cool for encoding OGG audio with 6 channels and playing over home theater equipment. Or would this even be necessary. I think I recall that Nvidia nForce chipsets had a Dolby Encoder on the MCP that would do basically this. I could be wrong though.
