"Want to use MP3 compression in my projects..."

Hi.

I'm sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong thread (or even forum) but a guy must start somewhere.

I work with a Matrox RT2500/Premiere 6 video-editing combo and,although I'm able to export my projects (video+audio) in MPEG2 format,either with the Ligos plug-in or with Matrox's own codecs,when I try to use DivX 4.12 I'm stuck with the following audio codecs: DSP Group TrueSpeech,GSM 6.10,CCIT u-Law & A-Law,Microsoft & IMA ADPCM or none.

Well,48KHz-16bit-stereo uncompressed audio won't do and the other codecs aren't up to the job,quality/compression-wise.

What I'm looking for is a way of exporting Divx 4.12 video (which I can do) and MP3 audio (which I can't) straight out of Premiere. If at all possible.

I hope someone could lend me an hand on this.

Oh,and in case you're wondering: "Yes,I'm very much stuck with Premiere... Hence 'Matrox RT2500/Premiere 6 combo'".

Have you tried installing the Radium MP3 codec? Should be available in the downloads section.

Thanx for the quick reply fewtch.

I downloaded the Radium codec (not from this site since the "anti-leech page" kept showing. I know leeching costs money, but I don't think writing user-unfriendly code is the answer. Specially in a site otherwise so useful & user-friendly. That's just my opinion anyway).

Installed & tried it. No use.

But I noticed one thing: if I choose to export the audio track from the project as a Windows Waveform the MPEG Layer-3 compressor is there. Actually now there are two: the Radium one and the one installed by default (I think!). And there's no nominal distinction between them. And I still can't choose any settings other than the conversion rate & audio format.

But I think this is a start, because if I export the project without audio (DivX 4.12) and then export the audio (MP3) I can then join the two files without further re-compression,can't I?

If this is possible (and I hope I'm not wrong) my only concern will them be synchronization between picture & sound.

Will they sync? Or will it turn out to be like those dubbed Kung-Fu movies from the '70-'80s?

While I usually use virtual dub for my compressions I do the audio after I have done the video and I have not had any sync problems, (I actually splice the audio in as uncompressed pcm, rip it to a wav out of the compressed video using vdub, compress the wav with lame then splice it back in with nandub - replacing the uncompressed audio with the mp3 audio) It is sorta complicated but that way there are no sync problems even when editing the video (clipping the ends is all I do).

If you wanted to use the radium codec you could just open the compressed video with uncompressed audio (from premier) in virtual dub, set the video to 'direct stream copy' and the audio to 'full processing mode' and select the mp3 codec form the compression options, then save to avi. This works for me as well but I like the quality of the lame compressor more.

hope this helps a little

ps don't change sample rate when doing this (unless someone tells you otherwise or you try it and it works) but I have had sync problems when changing sample rates

"(I actually splice the audio in as uncompressed pcm, rip it to a wav out of the compressed video using vdub, compress the wav with lame then splice it back in with nandub - replacing the uncompressed audio with the mp3 audio"

When you use the Radium Codec instead of lame, you can also do the following: export video without audio from Premiere, export wave from Premiere. Open Video in Virtualdub, select Audio->WAV Audio. Select direct stream copy for the video, full processing for the audio, then chose mp3 as compression for the audio. Save .avi, ready!

The Radium codec might not be available in commercial programs like Premiere, it also isn't in Ulead Media Studio...

Actually, theReal,I figured that out immediately after I read the reply from Asmodian.

That was exactly what I did,but somehow my Premiere installations (W2K & Xp) must have got all confused by the number of codecs I was pumping in and I can't seem to get the video (DivX 4.12) file to come out with the correct parameters.

Nevermind,I'll try again tomorrow and throughout the week-end but I'm sure this is the way to go.

VirtualDub looks to be one amazing piece of software.

On the other hand I'm yet to figure out how to work with Lame. I think I'm entering the correct commands (i.e.: lame -h -v 0 [filename.wav]) but I keep getting "Could not find '0'".

Well you were all quite helpful, since I was clueless on what to do and 12 hours latter there's at least an hint pointing the way.

Thanx a lot!

I'll keep you posted.
