MKV Tags/MetaData

I'm re-encoding some Windows Media Center videos to AVC, and I've been trying to figure out a way to keep the metadata in the .wtv files. With a little poking around I was able to find and alter a class to export the metadata in the .wtv files into mkv friendly tags. But although I have the general idea of how to do this, I really do not have any clue how the tags are supposed to be used, exactly how they are supposed to be formatted, or how they can be accessed once they are embed in the mkv. Is anyone here experienced in this area?
