GK and Windows Vista Home Basic

When setting up GK according to the guide, it instructs you to press the buttons "first pass" and "second pass" and configure the x264 codec. However, when I press the button labeled "first pass" the button shadows showing that it has been pressed but no "first pass" option screen opens (it does not open for the "second pass" button either). If I open the other first pass options for the Xvid and DivX5 codecs, the option screen opens and will allow configuration. A few questions:

- Has anyone encountered this problem?
- Can this step be skipped, and if so what kind of quality will it give (or should a different codec be used)?
- Is it a problem with my operating system (see computer specs below)?
- Computer specs: HP AMD Sempron 2.0ghz, Windows Vista Home Basic, 4gb RAM
- I am currently using AutoGK and the program is great, however I thought GK would allow more customization (in regards to bitrate/resolution) and potentially a better quality file, am I correct or incorrect?

For reference, I want the maximum quality that I can get. I wanted DVD quality backups so that I can protect my personal DVDs and play straight from my hard drive onto my TV. Thank you for any input.
