Adding MP4 files to Windows Media Player library?

Hello,

I'm using Windows Media Player 11 to stream media content to my Xbox 360.

Until the 360 allowed Divx, I encoded some videos to H.264 with the MP4 file extension.

The videos play fine in Media Player 11 and on the Xbox if I copy them to an USB stick.

However, the MP4 filetype isn't recognized by the Media Player and therefore isn't added to the Media Library.

On the Video Playback FAQ in question #32 they suggest
Quote:
"Your first option is to install a 3rd party MP4 DirectShow decoder to import MPEG-4 part 2 and H.264 files into your library."
Now I have FFMPEG installed and tried the trial version of 3ivx.
None of these add MP4 files to the Library.

Does anyone know a DirectShow decoder, that adds MP4 files to the Media Library of WMP11?

Hi!

Click on the following link (the result of a simple Googlesearch), which may provide the answer you seek:

It's nothing to do with lacking a directshow decoder for mp4, it's actually a known issue loads of people are having, myself included. As standard, WMP11 won't add .mp4 files to it's media library share even if you have the required codecs. Because of this, the 360 cannot see them either.

^Using the above fix on my XP machine, mp4 files now appear in the media library in WMP11, and appear on my 360, and work lovely!

On my Vista x64 machine, they appear in the media library in WMP11... but strangely still not on the 360. Odd.

Thank you very much, zachdms. The Registry Edit finally let WMP find the MP4 files worthy for inclusion. Now MP4 streaming to my Xbox works like a charm. Thank you very much again!
