How do i re-encode a avi file!

Hi this is my first post! and a simple questions
before i break any rules regarding the asking for whats best etc.
I will tell you what i want to do and let you guys give me a answer that suits best my needs as each persons best is different to anothers.

Ok what i want to do is know which program to use bear in mind i am a newbie, To re-encode a Avi movie to change its
native resolution.

Example a file that has a HD Resolution of 960X528 Xvid.
and due to my DVD player not playing that resolution.
I want to change it to something smaller i.e 640X352.
So as also to reduce size from 700MB to 350MB.

Without much loss in quality except obvious "Res Change" and also to keep the Audio i.e AC3 and Aspect Ratio and framerate and also Video Type i.e NTSC same or as close to the original.

Is there any straight forward Programs to do the job.
I have tried with Nero Vison but it just hangs when setting to 640X352 Xvid AVI file. But works with the nero mp4 settings

Hi and welcome to the forum,

Autogk can do it, it can keep your original audio or reencode to mp3 (see FAQ for limitations)
If you set 2 pass 350Mb size, it will decide on the appropriated size, you can, if you are ready to try/mess-up, fix a fixed/min/max width

Others all in one may also do it like Mkvmagic or Staxrip, see the appropriate threads.

I have tried AutoGK but when i load a avi file i get this error?

Cannot open file "C:WINDOWS\TEMP|agk.tbl". The system cannot find the file specified.

I thought it was becuase i am using Windows ME.

But if i load a vob file then i get no error and the output file is auto completed with the audio tracks box also auto filled.

And can add the job and start.

But cannot with a avi file i get error then you cant add job?

I will try Gordon Knot, but do i take it you select encoder tab then add, then xvid is the frame server the file you wish to convert/encode.

I got my resolution settings set to 1:1 640X352 ill give it a try!

Thanks for Help!

Hi!

Is this only a typo that you've made in your posting here? If not, although I know nothing about AutoGK, I'd guess that it should probably read:

"C:WINDOWS\TEMP\agk.tbl".

Off a Newsgroup dont worry i doubt it is that illegal as it was
a post of a worldcup 2006 game i missed, that was posted as
3 X700MB 960X480 RES i wanted to rerip it down to, 3 X 350MB at 640X Res or about.

The World Cup games i could get off TV for Free so i could have recorded it by VHS or DVD Recorder if i had one

Any way i could not get Auto GK to do anything same error as before, however it would allow me to get further and add a job if i chose to rip a DVD?

And Gordon Knot i will have to learn as the output was not as planned.

Is there any other software reconmended to change the following on a file e.g Xvid/DivX AVI.

1:Resolution:
2:Frame Rate

i.e if Frame rate is 23fps which is choppy if re-encoded to 25fps would this be smooth 25fps.

Or would same thing apply as with Digital Pictures, such as
if Res is low say camera phone then re-size of the image wont improve on originals quality.

What i am saying if original frame rate is poor then is there no way to make it good, or can you only get as good as original source!

Thank You!
