Free Nle

Hello there,

Does anyone know of a useable and nice free video editor for widows?
I found Wax but I would like to know if something better exists.

Thank you.

Jahshaka
Positron
ZS4

For me only works ZS4, but not that great. Positron is at the begining so u can't do anything with it. Jahshaka is more "advanced", but that is just crazy talk!
So, I don't really know a free NLE that actually u can do some production, but u can try them and hope that things will turn around. Like me!

Windows Movie Maker is probably the best you will get on windows, for free.

It's impossible to download when you don't have a fast connection at home. It only works with windows update and Internet Explorer and you have to got XP SP2 — which is also impossible to get without fast connection because I can't download it at work and get it to home.

Is there a better program? You know, one that doesn't crash on you every 3 seconds? I have not tried positron yet, but Jahshaka crashes, WMM2 crashes ocassionally, and I never like zs4. Is there a huge list somewhere with recommendations and so on?

Avid do a FREE NLE http://www.avid.com/freedv/

I have never used it, but it won't do any harm to check it out

This looks good, but I don't often use DV. Anyone have any others?
Thanks for the reply by the way.

@ tekNerd:

thanks for the list. i'd love to see one of these replace premiere pro, which is completely balls, but with a slick and usable interface (the only thing preventing me from using something else).

i'm going to try the bottom two tonight. i already tried jahshaka but was unimpressed (didn't want something that was set out like ulead or imovie - i would like something with a proper timeline...)

That would be awesome! A multitrack virtualdub would be absolutely perfect! Anyone know if it is being developed? Is it easy to do?

that's not entirely true
I have WMM 2.1 working here, winxp home sp1
there is a trick to it.. first you have to find the WMM 2.0 installer (it works on sp1), then you have to find somebody with the WMM 2.1 executable who will share it with you

The main downside is you can only export to wmv or dv-type1 with WMM2, and for those like me, with less than 10gb of free hdd space, it's not really an option.

I had tried ZS4, it ran about as fast as a frozen snail, uninstalled it in less than 10 minutes. I plan on testing ZS3 (the previous version) to see how that is. I'll have to check out the others mentioned here too...

I really like Sony Vegas. I reccommend it if you are going to purchase a software. Primiere costs almost three hundred dollars more (even more i think).

what about ulead? They make several different versions and I here they are the best. They problem is that they don't support avisynth as far as I know.

I have used quite a few different editors and i tell you there is nothing more anoying than when you spent time putting together a video and it just crashes.

I have used pinacle studio 9 it was ok i liked the interface but it got really laggy with big projects.

studio 10 well what a pos its so slow and well dumbed down.

Vegas 6 well i always liked vegas for audio editing and the workflow and stability of this application make it probably the best reasonably priced video editing application.

Even though its sony owned now this sonic foundry creation still has what it takes for me and i hope sony dosent screw it up in the future versions like avid did to pinacle studio.

edit: forgot to post link to user coments of vegas on videohelp

sony don't have a competing NLE app for vegas, so they've no reason to bugger it up and dumb it down.

avid, however, have several NLE programs covering the whole gamut. i guess they acquired pinnacle studio with the intent of swallowing competition rather than pooling resources to make a better product... who'd have thought that could happen?

now adobe... don't get me started. if you walk past my workplace and hear swearing you can be sure it's because someone's trying to use premiere. very good interface, but stability quite literally couldn't be worse. it's at that point where it stays working long enough for you to miss what you lose when it does crash. and it will. it lulls you into a false sense of security by working, then it'll disappear in a puff of windows, or it'll hide behind a hall-of-mirrors smokescreen, or turn completely white and hang until you kill the process manually (or hard-reboot).

i would like to see Adobe destroyed. in every sense of the word. the world doesn't need another uncaring, extortionately profit hungry software megalith. we already have Microsoft...

[edit]

btw, i read the thread title as "fred nile". disturbing...

So premiere sucks huh? Well I was just reading an article in PC mag a few days ago and they said that Avid is the #1 producer of off the shelf video editing software for major movie production studios such as ILM, Dreamworks, Jucas Films, etc. Although most of these companies use their own custom made softwares though. My main thought is that avid is probably the most reliable that you can by, with more features than Vegas? Is that right?

Sorry, I just realized I sound sort of like a commercial here, but I am curious. I also hesitate to use the word "best" as there are rules against such things.

Question shortened: Would Avid be the most likely software to buy if I really wanted to get into advanced digital film editing?

avid has been around for a very long time and thus its well established in the video editing industry.
Alternatively i have been told that Final Cut Pro on the mac is probably the best personal computer editing application.

To be honest i watched a demo of pinancle liquid edition and they just kept going on about useless features and stuff you really woulnt use unless you want it to look like it was made by a 4 year old.

Just look at the best fx free movies what transistions do they have mostly simple transitions or just straght cuts.
An NLE editor needs to be reliable, easy to use and not get bogged down when doing big projects.

I dont like to give all the credit of vegas to sony as its really sonic foundrys creation but i do however like sonys comitment to continueing the development of the application.

i am not sure what the big NLE applications do but if they dont already they should take a leaf out of the CAD applications book and have an autosave feature that saves the project perodically but this might prove to be too demanding on video projects.

premiere autosaves... often it crashes halfway through and corrupts your project
