MP3 normalisation after encoding ??
Hi all,
Im just wondering if anybody knows a way that mp3 can be normalised without any quality loss (not something that you want considering the already lossy nature of the encoding :\ ) Be clear that im talking about mp3 after its been encoded - i can't use the original wavs. I used soundforge to decode the mp3, apply normalisation and then recompressed the result. The results were, in 2 words, total shite, so i can't use that method. I sort of have this sneaking suspicion that what i want to do is impossible - so if anyone could enlighten me id be glad ![]() Cheers!

It IS possible to change gain in mp3 lossless (I guess changing scalefactors) and there are many programs that do this (in fact google is a good way to find them but...
). Anyway here are some links, first of all you can get MP3Trim v1.7 in Doom9's download page, quite good, but it's only a demo (if you manage to get the PRO version, it's up to you). Then you have MP3DirectCut, quite good also (and freeware), not very VBR friendly and can't normalize, only amplify (if you manage to get the amplification correctly it works wonders). And last we have MP3Amp, written by Sergey Sapelin, completely freeware, and if you call it without the amplification parameter it will calculate and apply to normalize. Sorry but I have lost the URL I got this from. BTW, this one is attached. Edit: I couldn't get the attachment to work at first .

Thanks man, thats gonna be pretty helpful
i think (3:30am here so im tryin themtomorow). all the mp3s i wanna process are CBR so that app should suffice pretty well i think. I find vbr pretty bad for music because it seems to lose the timing of the music (usually slooowing down). Glad that dont affect my rips ...yet ![]() Thanks again!

you don't need anyone's permission to make an attachment.. however it will only be available for public display (and download) once a moderator or admin has okayed it.
