Mpeg 2 codec for windows movie maker
Hi all. I am a newbie when it comes to using Windows Movie Maker 2. I want to edit a Mpeg 2 video of mine and so I go to import it, choose the file from the list click okay, and then the program tells me that I do not have a mpeg 2 video codec installed. One problem is that the options it gave me all cost money. Another is that I checked available video codecs and I have one installed by Cyberlink PowerDVD. WMM does not seem to recognize if for some reason.
I have attached a picture of what I see in the decoder checkup. Any help would be apreciated. If anyone has any recommendations for a free mpeg 2 codec that won't interfere with the rest of my system that would be great. Although if it does that is okay to as I can always uninstall it when I am done. I also have ffdshow if that helps. Thanks again in advance.

In regard to the main question, if u have ffdshow (hopefully, the latest builds) it can decode and encode MPEG-2.
To get it to decode MPEG-2, go to "video decoder configuration" on your Start --> Programs --> ffdshow (or wherever it is) menu, then go to the "Codec" tab, and where it says MPEG-2, select from the drop-list "libmpg2" or "libavcodec". To get it to encode: On your encoding app just select ffdshow as compression format and set to MPEG2 in the "Encoder" tab. Recommendation: dump windows movie maker and try any other of the thousands of open-source/free video preocessing programs outthere. One in mind, VirtualDubMod, one of the most widely used video apps there are. There´s a difference between being a newbie and being plain masoquistic

I believe I tried that very thing not to long ago. I shall try it again, but windows movie maker 2 does not seem to recognize it. Movie Maker 2 does deal with Directshow right?
And I know that there are other free programs out there as I use Virtualdub, but they don't have the editing capabilities of Movie maker 2, such as transistions soundtrack editing, credits, picture orientating, "special effect" and so on. Unless you have a better free program that can do all that, I will have to stick with movie maker 2.

@Merlin7777
Hi! Have you "registered" the PowerDVD MPEG2 filter/codec with Windows? (Substitute the actual name of the PowerDVD video ".AX" file instead of "MPEG2.ax" in the following example). In a DOS box, type the following: c:\windows\system\regsvr32 MPEG2.ax |

Okay I found the file. I put it into the system 32 folder. Next I tried doing the dos thing.
my line looked like c:\windows\system32\regsrv32 clvsd.ax and the prompt said something like "c:\windows\system32\regsrv32 " is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. I am sorry about making this hard, but I just want it to work. I even tried your line c:\windows\system\regsrv32 clvsd.ax and it still said the same thing as above.
