Advice needed

I just ordered a new PC which I am planning to use exclusively for DVD production. It is a 64-bit system and I probably need to purchase new software that is 64-bit compatable (my existing editors are all getting ancient and I probably need to update anyways.) I plan to do most of my editing in .avi and occasionally in MPEG. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

If it is AMD Athlon 64 or Intel Pentium 4 with EM64T then it can also run 32-bit software without problems even if you are running a 64-bit windows version, and you can choose to run 32-bit windows version as well without any problems but then you can't use 64-bit software at all. You can also run 16-bit software but not in the 64-bit windows versions. This mean you have to choose 16-bit and 32-bit or 32-bit and 64-bit. This is limitations by the Windows versions, not the processor. In theory you could have an OS that supported 16-bit, 32-bit and 64-bit at the same time.

I have dual-boot with both Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. The problem with 64-bit windows is the lack of drivers for the hardware. But if you buy everything from scratch you can search after hardware that is supported with 64-bit drivers. 64-bit drivers are required in 64-bit windows versions because the 32-bit drivers won't work. Regarding antivirus software you'll need a 64-bit software because antivirus is almost like on the driver level if the OS. I got NOD32 which is available in 64-bit.

Regarding the software I'm also interesting in knowing what to buy. I have recently installed my new 64-bit computer but haven't installed all the needed software yet. I know VirtualDub is available in a 64-bit version. But what else?

I do also have a dual core CPU so personally I would want the software to be multithreaded as well as 64-bit enabled.
