Output 720p AVCHD discs as 1080p on PS3

I've burned a few 720p AVCHD movies on DVD-Rs and they look great. I wonder if it possible to force the PS3 to output native 720p to 1080p, like how DVDs are upscaled to 1080p. If I just play the .m2ts file from the HDD, then it plays in 1080p, but on disc, it always switches my LCD's resolution. I tried unchecking 720p and 1080i, but then it just ran the movie in 480p (eek!).

Is this something that would have to be resolved in a firmware update?

Are you recoding the video yourself? If so you can recode to 1080p instead of 720p. I have started recoding to 1080p rather than 720p, and the results are excellent, especially if you use subtitles alot as you can just include the original PGS stream(s) and forget about all that SUP and optical character recognisition nonsense.
